I have learned much more than I could try to think of on the top of my head, because communication is more than just talking or texting. One of my most influential classes, Nonverbal Communication, taught me what people do, how they act, and react says so much about what is going on with them, and what they are thinking even without saying anything. People can say something and express something totally different with their body language, which is how one can find the truth behind a message. Seeing as I am a double major in theatre, this class stood out to me as something that is much more pertinent to me than many other classes because it pertains to every interaction you may have with another person.

Communication has always been important to me, but especially with the COVID-19 pandemic occurring, communication has become even more important for everyone. Making sure to stay updated on information about the spread of Corona, the laws pertaining to groupings, and how the economy is being effected are extremely important. An occurrence such as this can really open one’s eyes to how dire mass communication has become for our society. People always say how broad a communication major spans, but that is because the media allows us to communicate on a large scale which has become the norm for many big businesses, the press, and for politics. There is a constant flow of information to be shared with the public that communication majors have become extremely necessary for almost every area of study.

After graduating from St. Norbert, the dream would be to pursue theatre and audition out of college for shows. This however is not realistic or viable due to theaters closing from COVID-19. The skills that I have from being involved in theatre greatly increase my communication skills and interactions with people. I plan to look for journalism, broadcasting, or other communication based jobs. These jobs are so important just as I had said earlier because they provide information for the public. I feel with all my experiences in theatre I have very good interpersonal skills. I have a presence in front of a camera that could help me with broadcasting, and my Writing for Media class has helped my writing to be focused and get the important news across in a way that draws audiences to read further. Not only that, but I had the chance to take part in the GAP experience which focused on experiential service learning where we traveled for a semester between four locations. We looked at different injustices, pushed our physical and mental boundaries, and learned how certain people are making huge differences in society and how we can do the same.
