If you’re looking for a peek into my life, you’ve come to the right place! We’ll start at the beginning, in Ripon, Wisconsin where I was raised. I moved to Ripon from Round Lake Beach, IL at the age of four, so Ripon is really the only place that I have memories of. On the day of our move, I met the neighbor girl with whom we shared a yard, and just to my luck, she was exactly my age. What I hadn’t realized in my young age was that God gifted me my lifelong best friend that day. Kayla and I grew up together, eating dinner at each other’s houses and annoying each other’s siblings. By the time high school came around, we could hardly believe we were going to be separated as Kayla was off to a boarding school in Watertown, but we never lost touch and neither of us lost our biggest supporter. High school was an extremely busy time for me, and I was in almost every activity and club you can think of. Band, choir, cheerleading, equestrian, tennis, swimming, color guard, National Honors Society, and Spanish club took up my time during and after the school day as well as a job at the pool as a lifeguard during the summers. Now in my college years, I look back and wonder how I didn’t just drop dead in the hallways. My love for reading began with my father reading me books before bedtime as a child, and still persists to this day, but I had one class that really inspired me towards studying English. My junior year of high school, amidst the drama of the 2016 presidential election, I took a creative writing class. The teacher had such a passion for writing and truly believed in every student and their writing. Her positivity for my writing inspired me to pursue a degree in English, but unfortunately, her amazing teaching and support were dulled by the fact that she was having an affair with another kid in my class… oops. Despite her um, *shortcomings,* I was still excited to start my adventure toward better writing. Shortly after coming to college, I realized that an English major wasn’t actually for me as I state in my introduction (check that out if you would like to hear the sob story.) And that pretty much catches you up on my life up to SNC.

Now, a sophomore in college, I am thriving as a Spanish major-English minor, a cheerleader, and a member of the social group Canadian Cornishams (CCHams.) Being a student at SNC has provided me with the amazing opportunity to study abroad several times in my time as a second semester sophomore. My freshman year, I read and studied Ulysses and other works by James Joyce and headed to Ireland during the summer to experience Irish culture and Joyce’s home to apply my knowledge. This last semester, I studied food ethics before heading to the Philippines to apply what we learned during the semester. Along with amazing study abroad opportunities, SNC has also given me the amazing gift of being able to cheer for the Green Bay Packers as a member of the cheer squad here, which is a once in a lifetime experience. As of right now, I don’t really know what is in store for me in the future, but whatever it is, I hope it is bright and fulfilling.

I have four different essays on display in my presentation portfolio and a fifth that didn’t make the cut, but can still be found in the process portfolio. In my Summary and Evaluation I take a look at Terry Eagleton’s “What is Literature?” and summarize his points before expressing why I only partially agree with the definition he formulated for the word “Literature.” In my Psychoanalytic essay I psychoanalyze Edna Pontillier’s character in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening with Freudian theory. In the essay, I discuss how Edna’s superego battles the desires of her id and how she eventually gives into her desires. In my Feminist and Gender essay, I discuss how Kate Chopin uses Edna’s desire-driven character to empower other women to acknowledge their desires and step out of perfect domesticity in her novel The Awakening. The fourth essay in my presentation portfolio is a Reader Response essay that uses Hans Robert Jauss’ theory of a reader’s “horizon of expectations” to describe why readers of Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” often miss the religious message within the work. My fifth essay does not appear in the presentation portfolio, but it is a close reading essay that describes how the halo effect influences the governess in Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw.

Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your stay!

Alaina

Hi there!
