This piece fulfills Learning Objective 1, answering communication questions using appropriate research methods. The target audience for this piece was Dr. Smith, my classmates, and those who participated in my research study. For this assignment, our research focused on the ways students at St. Norbert College prefer the College to share information. This project was created because we were interested in finding preferred methods of communication, but it also helped the college learn more about their most important target audience, their students.

WHICH-COMMUNICATION-CHANNELS-SHOULD-SNC-USE-TO-SHARE-INFORMATION-WITH-STUDENTSDownload

Source

Source Credibility in Sports Journalism – Writing For Media (LO1)

This piece is a final research paper completed in Writing for Media in Fall 2019. This piece fulfills Learning Objective 1, answering communication questions using appropriate research methods. The target audience for this piece was Professor Milbourn and my classmates. For this research paper, I had to choose a topic of interest, and then interview someone that is familiar with the chosen topic. The topic I chose for this paper was sports credibility in sports journalism. I interviewed Rob Demovsky, a reporter that covers the Green Bay Packers for ESPN. Rob experiences source credibility on a first-hand basis, working with many news sources and agents to cover athletes daily. I created this piece because I wanted to discuss issues about credibility in journalism such as competition, anonymity, and financial pressure.

Source-Credibility-Research-PaperDownload

Final Research Findings – Mass Communication Theory (LO1)

This piece is a semester-long research project I completed for Mass Communication Theory in Fall 2021. This piece fulfills Learning Objective 1, answering communication questions using appropriate research methods. The target audience for this piece was Dr. Kretz and those who participated in my research study. Ultimately, my research focused on specific emotional responses fans have to televised sports. Participants completed a survey in order to measure factors such as their reactions to specific events before, during, or after a game, scales to measure their level of fandom, and questions surrounding their favorite NFL team. I chose to complete this study because I am an avid sports fan, specifically of Wisconsin sports teams. I wanted to compare fans who are all over the fandom spectrum in order to see if the results were similar or different to those at the same level. Furthermore, I also wanted to see specific emotional responses from fans such as sadness, anger, jealousy, etc. that fans have towards their favorite team.

Emotional-Responses-to-Televised-SportsDownload

Hafeman-COME468B-Final-Research-Project-VoiceoverDownload

An In-Depth Look at the Gender Wage Gap – Communication Research Methods (LO1)

This piece is a final research paper completed in Communication Research Methods in Spring 2019. This was an essay I wrote about the Truth Campaign. This campaign targets teenagers and young adults, warning them of the health effects of tobacco and nicotine products. For this essay, I researched the Truth Campaign and discussed its target audience and its message. I created this piece because I found the Truth Campaign to be compelling, as their values support the end of tobacco and nicotine use in society. This piece fulfills Learning Objective 2, creating messages appropriate to the audience, purpose, and context. The target audience for this was Dr. Kretz, and Michael Eisner, CEO of Disney. For this assignment, I wrote a letter to Michael Eisner discussing the lack of diversity in Disney’s hiring process. I provided research to Mr. Eisner that although his company excels in creating a diverse and welcoming environment, the percentage of women and minorities combined was barely over 50%. I wrote this letter to provide Mr. Eisner with a different perspective on his hiring processes. Likewise, I wrote this letter to discuss an issue that is prevalent in society.

T.V.-Executive-LetterDownload

Breaking (Bad) Down the Bechdel Test – Gender and Media (LO3)

This piece is a final project for Gender and Media in Fall 2020. For this piece, I watched every episode of Breaking Bad in seasons one and two, as well as episodes 1-3 in season three. Each week of the semester, I watched two episodes per week to see if the episode passed the Bechdel Test. I also analyzed each episode using the sex-role perspective to see if any characters possessed character traits that went for or against their specific pronouns. At the end of the semester, I collected all my findings and organized them onto this poster. I created this poster because Breaking Bad is my favorite television show, and it was a show that provided a good example of the Bechdel Test.

Black Mirror Essay – Comm Tech and Social Change (LO3)

This piece is a final project for Comm Tech Social Change in Spring 2022. This piece fulfills Learning Objective 3, critically analyze messages. The target audience for this was Dr. Glantz and my classmates. For this essay, I analyzed Nosedive, an episode of Black Mirror that is about social media, and it’s grasp on society. In this essay, I discussed examples from the episode and how they relate to our current society. For example, I compared the “social scoring system” from the show to Instagram. I compared how both of these social medias promote the “perfect lifestyle”, and make it seem like edited photos are genuine lifestyles. I chose to write about Nosedive because I felt it was a perfect correlation to society today. It was scary to watch the episode and think about what could happen if our society begins to look like the society in the show, where people with lower socioeconomic status were denied some bases of life such as a safe vehicle to drive and a sustainable job to pay the bills.

Black-Mirror-EssayDownload

Tetrads Essay – Comm Tech and Social Change (LO3)

This piece is a final project for Comm Tech Social Change in Spring 2022. This piece fulfills Learning Objective 3, critically analyze messages. The target audience for this was Dr. Glantz and my classmates. For this essay, I analyzed Marshall McLuhan’s Four Effects model. McLuhans four “laws” were transformed into a “tetrad” featuring enhancement, retrieval, reversal, and obsolescence. I chose to analyze Kanye West’s newest streaming device, the Stem Player, using McLuhan’s model. Throughout the essay I discussed how the Stem Player enhances, retrieves, reverses, and obsolesces media. I chose to write about the Stem Player because it is one of the newest technologies in modern society. Kanye West is also one of my favorite artists and I enjoyed writing a paper about something I am passionate about. I critically analyzed the Stem Player by first explaining McLuhan’s theories in depth, and then connecting them to my chosen technology.

Hafeman-Tetrads-EssayDownload

IRPP Paper – Communication Research Methods (LO3)

This piece is a final project for Communication Research Methods in Fall 2019. This piece fulfills Learning Objective 3, critically analyze messages. The target audience for this essay was Dr. Smith and the researchers whose studies I participated. This was an essay I wrote about my participation in SONA research projects. I discussed the ways in which research methods I learned about in class connected to research projects I participated, such as sending out surveys, asking precise questions, and perfecting the study by doing it more than once in order to fix mistakes the second time around. I wrote this essay to summarize my learnings and connections. Furthermore, I summarized studies I participated in order to compare my class research to theirs. Lastly, I critically analyzed messages in this piece by enacting my mindful responses to messages I interacted with.

IRPP-PAPERDownload

Which Communication Channels Should SNC Use To Share Information With Students – Communication Research Methods (LO1) This piece is a group research project that was conducted for Dr. Smith’s Communication Research Methods class in Spring 2019.
