I have learned a great deal while at Saint Norbert College. My minor has taught me many communication related skills such as conflict types and management, communication styles, and various theories related to communication. It has also taught me about different media. Media has different affordances which allows us to accomplish different tasks. Throughout college, I have had two jobs, one internship, and one leadership position on campus. The different communication skills and media skills have helped me to excel at my jobs, internship, and leadership role. At the Bursar Office, one of my jobs, I had to deal with many different people. Because it dealt with finances, people had different feelings about talking to a student worker. The skills I have learned helped me in dealing with some of the more difficult parents. Talking on the phone was scary at first, but through practice and the skills I applied, it became a breeze. I have become more confident in my communication skills, specifically talking on the phone. Once I graduate, I will be training to take over the family business. Because I will be working in the office for the next few years as assistant controller, communication skills will be crucial. I will be in a leadership position so knowing how to communicate with a larger group of people who all have different needs is important. A communication and/or media studies minor means being able to understand human interaction on a deeper level. We use communication every day, so I think it is extremely important to understand communication.
