On a professional level, the major curriculum has taught me various research methods in the communications field, as well as tools to analyze and critique different forms of media. I have also learned how to navigate the ever-developing world of social media and the best ways to put these platforms to proper use. My courses in Small Group Communication and Communication Technology and Social Change have been specifically helpful in aiding my professional development.

On a more personal level, the Communications and Media Studies major has taught me a great amount of interpersonal skills and ways to evaluate and build healthier relationships with the people around me. My courses in Communication and Mental Health and Principles of Interpersonal Communication have taught me the different ways that humans interact with each other, and the methods we can put to use in order to build a healthier understanding of the people around us. Additionally, courses like Gender and Media and Television Criticism have allowed me to think more critically about the dominant messages that are sent within our society, and how these media messages influence and interact with our current culture and social/political landscape.

I chose to specialize in Media Studies because I’ve always been fascinated by the messages we receive from different types of media, whether its entertainment, news, or interpersonal communication. I’ve engaged with both critical and social scientific research within my concentration, conducted communications research, and analyzed various forms of media through these lenses. The research that I am proudest of in my college career is my research into media literacy and echo chambers, and the efforts/methods an individual can take to stop the spread of misinformation online and in media outlets.

Outside of the classroom, my work with the St. Norbert TRIPS Program and the Emmaus Center for Spiritual Life and Vocation has helped me learn different aspects of the communications discipline. I worked to plan events and lead workshops with student participants, teaching them how to be active and engaged citizens in their community. My classes that focused on Interpersonal and Mass Communication actually prepared me to take on this role, and through my participation in the TRIPS program I have gained even more knowledge about leadership, interpersonal communication and relationship building, and the use of social media for programming and educational resources. After graduation, I plan on continuing my work in promotion, through social media marketing or event coordinating.

To me, being a Communication and Media Studies student means that I have developed skills in various different fields.
