I always begin my paper with an outline that integrates my quotes and decides what my topic sentence of my paragraphs will be. The thesis of my essay evolves itself as a I go into deep analysis of the quotes that I provide in the paper.

When I finished my first draft of the paper, I had the intention of keeping Mademoiselle Reisz and Adele Ratignolle as the main view of my paper, focusing in on how they are foils to one another and how that affects the novel.

After the feedback I received from peer review and my first submission to my professor, I realized that I was missing an important element of the paper: the “so what?” aspect. Reisz and Ratignolle are only as important to the novel as the help and lessons that they provide to Edna Pontellier, the main character. So I addressed more of Edna’s struggles in the paper and came across the main conflict in the novel and Reisz and Ratignolle are responsible for: Tradition vs. Autonomy.

My first revision of the paper helped clear up the confusion about Edna’s role in the character analysis of Reisz and Ratignolle, and I just needed to clear up my understanding and explanation of the feminine construct that Ratignolle represents in the novel. My professor’s comments helped me realize that Ratignolle is more of a traditional figure than a romanticized figure, and that was fixed in my third and final draft of the paper.

My second revision focused on style techniques. I made sure my grammar and paragraph structure was correct, made a few changes, and submitted the revision to my professor.

With that final revision done, my paper was ready to be added to my portfolio!

Links to Drafts

Peer Review
Close Reading Draft One

Professor’s Comments

Close Reading Revision 1 (Track Changes)
Professor’s Comments

Close Reading Revision 2 (Track Changes)

My Writing Process Beginning with my actual reading of Chopin’s The Awakening, I made sure to highlight different quotes that I hoped would be useful in my close reading analysis once I had finished the novel.
