I have learned a great deal within my time in the Communication discipline. I have learned the true importance of effective communication; many of our message get lost in translation on a day to day basis, and knowing how to navigate this reality is an important step in mitigating ineffective communication. Through my studies, I have seen just how ineffective we as imperfect human are at communicating with one another\u2014we often don’t say what we mean or mean what we say, and having the knowledge of how human communication works and how to navigate our shortcomings has been highly valuable to me when navigating the professional world and I my own personal relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I began my studies in the media concentration, but eventually shifted my focus to the communication concentration. I found myself highly interested in the use of critical theories as a perspective to view the world and create things. I really appreciated how critical theories engage with social justice and actively seek to point out injustices and work to eliminate them. I find this super important and was very happy to work with critical-based theories and ideas in my work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After graduation, I am highly interested in pursuing an MA in English, my primary area of study. However, I still plan to use the skills I have gained from my communication studies to my advantage in reaching this goal. For example, the skills I learned from Business & Professional speaking will make me a more appealing candidate because of my knowledge of how to conduct myself when speaking to groups of people in a professional setting. The use of theory is also used in English studies, so my utilization of critical theories in Communication Theory will already have given me experience in this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An experience outside of the classroom that has also helped me in the realm of communication is my time on the SNC Swim & Dive team. Being a part of a team requires an attention to effective communication\u2014whether it be with teammates or coaches, everyone needs to be on the same page and cooperating for the team to succeed. Being a part of the team environment proved crucial in my development in using effective communication in order to achieve both individual and team goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
