This was a project in which my group and I had to learn the identity of the company Plexus and essentially give them some solutions on how to better their communication. This assignment was done first semester of my senior year and our targeted audience was our professor.

Start-

September 24, 2021

Plexus is a company that helps people bring their ideas to life. Plexus works with others in creating technologies and innovations. Their big thing is being a partner that others can trust and count on, and they make a promise to be the best and most reliable partner in this industry. Plexus has great agility and flexibility, they have a customer-first mentality, and they are a collaborative partner. They help bring ideas to the table and they make the process one seamless workflow. They also have three market sectors which are industrial, healthcare, life sciences, and aerospace and defense.

Plexus is not only in Wisconsin, they are a global company. They have warehouses in Mexico, United Kingdom, China, and many other countries. Their global headquarters is located in Neenah, Wisconsin. They have 26 total locations around the globe. Plexus has careers for many people, along with 19.5K global teammates. Their F20 revenue is 3.4 billion. They also have internships available for people who are at a younger age looking to get into this type of career path.

When it comes to sustainability for Plexus, they have four main focuses. The first focus is caring for their employees. This will hopefully keep their employees around for much longer and will give a good representation to customers on how they will be treated. Second is supporting communities, third is doing business responsibly, and fourth being improving our world. This all relates to Plexus being a company and partner that people can trust and count on.

Overall Plexus sounds like a great, friendly company to work with. There are two things that really stand out, the first being that they care for their employees. If a company takes care of, and cares for their employees their employees will take care of, and care for their customers. The second being that they have a customer-first mentality. When a company is able to put their customers first, things usually turn out pretty good. If they don’t put their customers first, and some customers have a bad experience, then they will talk poorly about the company and things will not run as smoothly.

Plexus has six core values they stand by. Each of these values cover one of the five steps to Henry Fayol’s theory of classical management. First, they plan for the future by having agility and flexibility. Plexus is able to service company’s all around the world. To do this the company needs to be able to have flexibility to work on many future projects at a time if they want to be successful.

Another one of their values is to focus on key markets. This goes hand in hand with Fayol’s theory of organization. Plexus hand picks the industries they want to dive into. This will ensure they have companies that want to work with them and do well. A big part of this step is to ensure efficiency. When Plexus hand picks highest quality companies to work with that need help, they will be able to get work done.

The next step on Fayol’s classical management theory is commanding, setting tasks to get done. Plexus has a strict engineering culture, this is what the whole company is based off of. All of their work deals with high-end electronics which work with networking, medical, commercial, and defence companies. They set tasks and problem solve when needed.

Plexus believes in a customer-first mentality and being a collaborative partner to the companies they work with. This aligns with Fayol’s step of coordination. Plexus works with one company like they are their own. The customer- first mentality ensures the companies are working together. Plexus is determined to work with many partners and make it feel like they are the only ones collaborating with them.

The last value that Plexus has is product realization value stream. Faylo’s last step of classical management is controlling, seeing if the company is meeting the goals they set. They use many tools to get things done. Starting from when the projects began to when they end, Plexus gets through every challenge.

When discussing Plexus, the main goals and mission of the company imitates views of the classical theorists in various ways. First, the company’s goals of innovative productivity and problem solving solutions reflect upon the classical ideas of using communication to achieve efficiency in their productivity. Plexus puts out a very confident statement on their web page saying that they strive for excellence in communicating to their employees to find innovative ways in which to achieve solutions for their constituents. This is a way in which Plexus communicates to their staff and those looking to do business with them that they have the tools and knowhow to achieve efficiency by being innovative in their problem solving. One specific example that Plexus claims to do is by designing a team (could even be globally) to work specifically on a complex issue that comes up for a constituent, personalizing their approach and being more efficient in the process.

The company also utilizes another classical approach/company structure in their mission and goals by clearly identifying their power structures on their website. Within their website, they have an entire tab on leadership, distinctly representing their power structure right up front for everybody to see. Anyone applying for a job, already working there, or seeking their assistance can see just how much Plexus has structured their leadership to guide the company and establish a certain level of obedience within the company dynamic. Employees know right from the start who they answer to and who is in charge of every little nuance of their company life (human resources, quality and regulatory, communications and investor relations, etc.). As a whole, developing this structure allows for more organization within the company itself, making them more productive overall, as well as setting the stage for preliminary distinctions between employees and the management team within.

Work Cited

We’ll help you create the products that build a better world. Plexus. The assignment was to identify problems with communication inside the company, Plexus. We then had to apply our studies on communication to come up with a solution on how to improve communication within the global company. This assignment was done my first semester of my senior year and our targeted audience was both Plexus and our professor.

Start-

There are many different elements of communication that organizations rely on to complete business-oriented goals that progress our way of life as everyone knows it. When a company is able to communicate effectively amongst its workforce it is able to find great success. However, too much or not enough communication can lead to negative downfalls that may ultimately create further anguish within the organization. Businesses use elements of communication to create close bonds within supervisor employee relationships to ensure a safe and efficient work environment. A lack of communication can also lead to misrepresentation within a company as underrepresented groups are challenged with entering a workforce that is preeminently made up of white males. This may lead to the lack of interest from minority groups that will hinder the progress of integrating communities historically affected by racial prejudice into high class careers. Miscommunication can arise from a variety of elements in an organization including proximity, time, current events, and race.

Communication can always be improved within the workplace, and it can help a company to bring more to the table when interacting with their consumers or coworkers. The same can be seen for the company known as Plexus, a company that helps to create products that help in many fields, including the medical field. These products can help people, but the collaborating process can become very difficult if communication difficulties arise. Like many others, Plexus has endured many communication difficulties during their own journey through the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Plexus was able to persevere, but there is some interesting information that was obtained about the working environment of Plexus both before and after the quarantine era of the COVID-19 pandemic. An organization’s ability to communicate properly in a time of a crisis is essential to the company’s well being. A company just balances convergence with divergence in order to be flexible with challenges and be distinct and different from others. With the data collected through Plexus, alongside multiple academic and popular press sources, it can be theorized that many aspects of communication, when applied, can work hand in hand to improve and create progress within a company.

For one to be able to know how to improve communication within a company, they should first know how communication works within businesses and organizations. One source, Managing Diversity for Organizational Efficiency by Inegbedion, who helped to study diversity management and how it can impact organizational efficiency by looking into depth at many forms of management as well as the employee’s perception and teamworking skills (Inegbedion, 2020). They concluded that “diversity management and teamwork ™ are significant predictors of organizational efficiency…” (Inegbedion, 2020). Communication with one’s coworker is very important, and teamwork, which typically includes being able to communicate with one another, is very beneficial towards organizational efficiency. In Effective Management Communication Strategies, Shannon’s studies on communication within management concluded that “The findings of this study align with Duncan’s (1973) communication theory because employees who are motivated are also engaged and exert efforts to increase productivity and meet organizational goals.” (Shannon, 2018). When attempting to be as efficient as possible, motivation is very important. If workers are experiencing burnout or lack motivation, getting anything done can be difficult. However, certain tactics that align with aspects of communication can help employees to be motivated, as Shannon’s studies had proven (Shannon, 2018).

The most valuable tool of an organization is the communication chains that effectively progress business-oriented goals. While investigating verbal communication behaviors within the workplace it is important to understand which behaviors are routinely used (Keyton, et al. 2013). When understanding which behaviors are routinely used organizations may focus on communication planning to improve organizational effectiveness (Keyton, et al. 2013). Organizations are produced through communication according to communicative construction of an organization (Miller, et al. 2002). The traditional understanding of organizations is that they are containers within which communication occurs (Miller, et al. 2002). It is important to understand which work communication deserves a degree of scaling up or is of more importance than relational communication that is not motivated by business-oriented goals (Miller, et al. 2002). These behaviors are important for building an efficient training working force that is essential for reaching goals. These behaviors are most common in manager employee relationships by routinely practicing certain communication behaviors managers can create a safe and efficient environment for their workforce. Behaviors initiate a sequence of actions that work together to make progress in reaching conversational goals (Keyton, et al. 2013). According to social cognitive theory people acquire new behavior patterns by observing their peers’ behaviors, then self-correcting their own behaviors on the basis of social feedback or outcome achievement (Keyton, et al. 2013). Although there is no doubt that communication is essential for any organization one should not assume that more communication equates to better communication. To understand communication at work, it is important to emphasize task related conversation and behaviors. Whether implicitly or explicitly communication behaviors are evaluated by peers within the organization (Keyton, et al. 2013). By working within an organization it is expected that workers must engage in communication with one another driven by the motivation to complete a goal. The type of communication that promotes effectiveness within an organization is known as communication competence (Keyton, et al. 2013). Communication competence exists within organizations in many traits such as the specific way workers are taught to communicate with customers (Keyton, et al. 2013). The other way communication competence can be seen within the workplace is through the relationship supervisors have with their employees and the way they command their workforce (Keyton, et al. 2013). The relationship between competence and interpersonal communication assumes that any communication behavior a person manifests can be carried out repeatedly (Keyton, et al. 2013). These communication behaviors can help workers become more familiar with their workplace. Supervisors can use interpersonal persuasion which focus on the dyadic exchange between two or more parties (Miller, et al. 2002). This can create compliance among a workforce that can create an efficient and safe work environment. While trying to understand communication in the workplace it is expected that some relational communication may naturally occur amongst task related communication (Keyton, et al. 2013). These conversations can create close ties amongst workers that help increase competence in organization.

Understanding and eliminating barriers to career progress on the bias against people on the basis of their race rather than their skills or abilities has been an issue among organizations for years. Many organizations are made up of mostly white males rather than minority groups (Flory, et al. 2019). Underrepresented groups may be dissuaded by workplaces because organizations lack a demographic of diversity (Flory, et al. 2019). These groups may otherwise assume that they are underrepresented and lack the ability to progress in an organization due to the lack of minority workforce. When businesses project diversity among employees as an organizational value and priority, underrepresented groups may show more interest in applying themselves in that organization (Flory, et al. 2019). Organizations may also provide factual information to support their claims of diversity among employees to create interest among underrepresented groups (Flory, et al. 2019). These factors will increase the number of applicants from underrepresented groups to hopefully pave the way towards more diversity in a demographic that is predominantly white.

There are many things that affect communication within an organization, but having a bias is a specific affect that is likely to be overlooked. For example, a bias that is oftentimes overlooked would be a bias against one’s manager. One source, Interpersonal Perceptions Within Organizations by Anent, found that downward communication is much easier than upward communication. Relating this to interviews done with employees of Plexus, one employee had many great ideas on how to improve their communication. He suggested that they had a monthly half day or whole day expo to regroup in their cafeteria. They would use this time to figure out what exactly is happening, and what everyone is working on. He suggested using a slide show to present all of this information. However, it was not asked if he had talked to his manager about these ideas, but comparing these ideas to what was said in the study, the chances of this employee bringing these ideas to his manager are very low. On the other hand, he has most likely spoken about these ideas to his peers within the organization because downward communication is found to be easier than upward communication.

Knowing that downward communication was found to be easier than upward communication, organizations can attempt to counter this by having an open communication environment. A source, Effects of Communication Strategies on Organizational Performance, by Kibe stated, “An open communication environment is one in which all members of the organization feel free to share feedback, ideas and even criticism at every level” (Kibe et al. 2014). By having an open communication environment, it could help give employees the strength to speak up to those higher than them, and by adding criticisms, it could help organizations get closer to their goals. A well-defined strategy is one that engages employees and aligns with the organization’s business goals (Kibe et al. 2014). Having employees engaged can help ensure that everybody is united and that they are willing and motivated to do the work they need to do.

Motivation is another major topic that took place in another interview with a different Plexus employee, as they mentioned problems, involving burnout and a lack of time for many projects, that have seemed to have led to either a lack of motivation within the workplace. From the information from this interview alone, there is an obvious conflict taking place. There seems to be a perceived opposition of the goals at hand, especially with the deadlines of the goals and the interactions that are causing problems when they try to complete their goals. Within this interview, communication was also mentioned as a large issue, as it either gave information that no one understood or the communication was simply not there. This alone seemed to be something that could cause a large lack of motivation, as how and why would someone want to complete a task for their job that they know nothing about with very little time to complete it? There was a mention of a survey that employees take sometime during the year, but that it does not seem to do anything due to how it seems to not be reviewed very much. This could make people feel as if they do not have a voice, as their opinions may not even be looked at when considering what could be improved within a company. Not having a say in many aspects of the company’s occurrences, in regards to their deadlines and projects, can lead to a major lack of motivation. While this notion of motivation is all theorized, it is common sense to infer that a lack of time and poor communication can lead to a lack of motivation on behalf of the employees.

Social media has had a large impact on communication as well, and the same can be said for the communication within companies. One article, titled How has Social Media Emerged as a Powerful Communication Medium? by the University of Canada West, outlines this when they say “Social media is a crucial section of digital marketing, helping businesses go beyond demographic and geographic boundaries…employers are seeking professionals who are well-versed in social media platforms to take on important roles within an organization…” (University of Canada West). Social media is another aspect of every company these days, as it can help to increase globalization as well as showcase their company’s identity to their consumers. Social media seems to have a major impact on all companies, but yet this seemed to be mostly absent in the three interviews that were conducted for this topic. However, utilizing social media may not include the positive human component of the company that the employees may feel at the place itself. Social media can attempt to reflect it, but it may not be able to duplicate it; but it does not mean that it cannot emphasize it. Regardless, it does reach out to enough people to reach critical mass in terms of their consumer’s knowledge of Plexus. It seems that there is a high potential for media richness due to the different consumers they interact with, as they have consumers internationally that can showcase different communications culturally.

Overall, these aspects of communication presented can help to showcase how beneficial communication is to a company. Workers working with each other is something that is necessary for success to occur, and communication is something that is imperative for workers to be able to collaborate with one another. With this in mind, one should be aware of how communication can not only motivate people, but how it can also determine whether or not progress will be made or hindered. It is well known that companies that have great communication within their organizations tend to thrive and succeed much more than those who do not. Organizations can use different elements of communication to create a safe and efficient workforce that is goal oriented. This repetitive nature of communication could be very beneficial to companies wanting to train a workforce or maximize their own efficiency. Communicating is a strategy focused towards measurable results, and repetitively communicating important messages. With Plexus being a huge, global company it would be best for them to use multiple channels to communicate because their messages could easily be lost. It is important for Plexus to try and incorporate effective communication strategies to help amplify the organization’s performance as a whole.

Works Cited

Anant, H. This assignment consisted of doing research to see how companies use branding and how companies promote their brands. This assignment was done second semester of my sophomore year and my targeted audience was my professor.

Start-

04/09/2020

Scholarly Article Evaluation

Ashley, Christy, and Tracy Tuten. “Creative Strategies in Social Media Marketing: An Exploratory Study of Branded Social Content and Consumer Engagement.” Psychology & Marketing, vol. 32, no. 1, Jan. 2015, pp. 15–27. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1002/mar.20761.

In the article, An Exploratory Study of Branded Social Content and Consumer Engagement by Christy Ashley and Tracy Tuten we read about being creative with your social media strategies while marketing your brand can really help consumer engagement. There are many different ways that companies use social media to promote their brands. Some ways that companies use social media work better than others and some strategies can really help spark more consumer engagement. A lot of companies like to keep track of what social medias other companies are using and how they are using these social medias. Smaller brands look at what type of message bigger brands are portraying in there social media efforts and how are the tools, strategies, and appeals each company is using and how this relates to consumer engagement.

Throughout this article, we read a lot about company branding. This article shows how many different components there are when it comes to promoting one’s brands, and how many different ways it can be done. First, in this article, it talks about branding with social media. When it comes to branding with social media there are many different channels for marketing activity. The channels named in this article are customer relationship management, customer service, consumer research, lead generation, sales promotion delivery channel, branding, and paid advertising channel. The entire goal of company branding is to increase brand awareness, brand liking, and to promote their product in the hope to get more traffic in stores and online.

Then there is a developing effect in creative social contents, this part of the study shows that they identified a trend, this trend showed that in some efforts on social media it became an experimental free for all. These results often turn out in a different outcome than what they were originally hoping for. In this section, we read about how branded social activity was strongly correlated with a companies financial performance. The brands that spent more money and really tried to specifically publish content, build a network of friends, conversing within networks, and always kept their social media up to date with there brand were better off.

In another section of this article, we read about creative strategies for branded content. It says, “Creative strategies are the executional factors and message strategies used to bridge the gap between what the marketer wants to say and what the consumer needs to hear” (Ashley and Tuten). Having creative strategies is crucial when it comes to their importance in advertising results. It helps with having a plan and always knowing what to do next. It also helps to enhance what people hear about the brand, mentioned in the quote about, which can help promote more sales.

I think this article does a great job of finding the answers they were looking for. Their research questions are clearly stated. There are three, what are the social media channels top brands are using? What kind of creative strategies are top brands using? Last, what kind of social engagement do these top brands have? These are all significant questions and relate to the main topic of company branding. This was a good article because there were no limitations, there are so many companies and so many top brands that can be researched which probably made it easy when it came to getting information. This article is very specific and very clear and states everything they wanted stated. I think this article is very good and has a lot of depth to it, there is a lot that can be learned from reading this article.

In conclusion, after reading about being creative with your social media strategies while marketing your brand can really help consumer engagement, I have learned a lot about branding. Branding is one of the most important things to help a company grow. Making a good brand and promoting that brand well can really benefit companies. Consumers will be more interested and want to buy more of the product, but it is just as important to have creative strategies when it comes to branding. You almost want to think outside the box, the goal is to catch the audience’s eye enough to make them purchase the product. As shown in the article, there are many different ways companies use social media to promote their brands, but it is the strategy in how you promote your brands that can really make a difference.

Finish.

This piece below shows that I am able to identify, interpret, evaluate, and apply communications within the workplace. This assignment consisted of interviewing an employee at Plexus and then comparing my interview to those of my group. Using our interviews along with our knowledge on communications, we had to give some recommendations on how to improve communications throughout the global company. This assignment was done first semester of my senior year and our targeted audience was both Plexus and our professor.

Start.

November 23, 2021

Paper 3: Recommendations

Following interviews conducted with members of the Plexus staff, three main recommendations have been made to decrease communication breakdown and improve internal communication within a large organization like Plexus. Implementing tools such as open communication and active listening will improve the company’s feedback system. By cultivating these techniques, the company could better serve as a role model of the industry. The following recommendations will allow the staff of Plexus to work more efficiently.

The first step toward open communication is active listening. This skill requires attentive listening, a clear understanding, and a reflection on the meaning of the message. Active listening is proven to be an effective agent in group development as it establishes trust between two parties and promotes empathy for others (Leading Effectively, 2021). This communication tool improves mutual understanding through principles such as: attention, paraphrasing, and clarifying. Giving the speaker full attention shows that the receiver of the message is listening. Paraphrasing what the speaker has said, as well as asking questions, will eliminate any misunderstandings and reduce the risk of misinterpretations. Clarity within a conversation is essential in effective workplace communication.

An organization consisting of members who excel in listening skills will also excel in the effectiveness of communication and efficiency within the organization. Researcher Lynn Cooper describes listening competency as a skill that is appropriate and effective, meaning the listener understands the content of the interaction, and the interaction goals, needs, desires, or intentions, are met (Cooper, 1997). This can increase productivity because reaching a complete understanding of what needs to get done will allow the task to be completed quickly. When team members are proficient in listening skills, better personal connections can be built, stimulating collaboration between team members. Establishing strong connections and collaboration will increase productivity within the organization and improve facilitated feedback among employees. Incorporating listening education will improve team members’ listening skills, increase employees’ abilities to form connections with others in the workplace, and decrease the communication breakdowns within the organization. This education could be integrated into the routine training throughout an employee’s time with the organization.

Currently, the feedback process at Plexus runs through the Human Resources (HR) department, allowing employees to request feedback from managers and other team members. Employees have stated that the current feedback process in place is helpful, yet still poses limitations. Written feedback lacks important aspects of communication such as tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language. In talking with current employees, they mention that a helpful solution would be to incorporate both written and verbal feedback. This could be changed by utilizing the current survey provided by the human resources department and shortening it to only be a few questions. Then, ensure that the survey is given to the inquiring employee in person so that more feedback can be verbally communicated in a face-to-face setting. From past experience, it seems that written feedback is helpful because the inquiring employee can look back at their feedback at any point in the future, while face-to-face communication will allow both employees to be more respectful and helpful to each other.

Additionally, having a company wide seminar about giving and receiving feedback would help employees adjust to the new system and teach them how to handle feedback. Learning how to handle feedback is important because research findings indicate that often, ‘feedback is taken personally’ (LeClair & Page, 2008), causing the employee to feel attacked and become insecure. Offering a seminar on how to give and receive feedback could eliminate the possibility of employees being offended by criticism..

Potentially the most important step toward facilitating an effective feedback system is fostering an open communication environment. Researchers describe an open communication environment as “one in which all members of the organization feel free to share feedback, ideas and even criticism at every level” (Kibe et al. 2014). By promoting open communication in a work environment, employees gain the confidence to comfortably speak up to company leadership when an issue arises. With open communication, the risk of misunderstandings about the task at hand decreases and the organization can efficiently work toward their goals. A well-defined strategy is one that engages employees in the conversation and aligns with the organization’s business goals (Kibe et al. 2014). Having employees engaged can help ensure that everybody is united, willing, and motivated to do the work they need to do.

Within a large organization, communication breakdown is inevitable. Fortunately, many communication tools can be implemented to help decrease the amount of miscommunications and lost messages. One team member alone cannot fix the problem; and one single solution will not fix the entire problem. Plexus is an organization that consists of thousands of employees with connections all over the world; therefore, teamwork and collaboration is necessary for the company to effectively communicate. Effective communication creates a more efficient organization. Each Plexus team member must be relentlessly dedicated to practicing a variety of communication strategies to revamp the company’s approach to internal communication.

Finish.

This piece below shows that I am able to identify, interpret, and evaluate a global company.
