A person playing a sport ties both his coach and parents into the same social group. Parents can’t expect their kids nor their kids’ coach to reflect their personal identity. For example, a parent identifies as a winner. This parent’s kids team is losing and because this parent identifies as a winner, this parents behavior will change. The same goes for a coach. Another key point is that communication and having an understanding of the sport is very important. Not knowing what you are talking about when trying to approach an issue or defend yourself as a coach or a parent can result in conflict.

Going through this process was definitely overwhelming because at the beginning I had no clue on what exactly my end goal was besides to create an infographic. Once I started to do research and read through articles, I began to get an idea of how I wanted to go about creating this infographic. Then, once I started creating the infographic and putting the things together I was getting a sense of relief. I also really enjoyed working in Canva to create this infographic, and will definitely be doing more things within Canva.

The most challenging part about making the infographic was bringing the idea I had in my head to life. I had a bunch of ideas inside my head and trying to process through them and make them make sense in my head was challenging, let alone putting it all into an infographic. My biggest takeaway is that I need to pay much better attention to due dates when doing long projects like this. I shorted myself on not being more engaged, and I think if I were to be more engaged I would have enjoyed the process and wouldn’t have been as stressed out. I think by going through this process it has definitely helped me be more critical when consuming information. Obviously by having four sources I could have made a much longer infographic, but just being able to pull the good information out will definitely benefit me in the future.

Part 2

I would define identity as someone’s personality traits, their physical characteristics, their abilities, interest, hobbies, and just what makes them, them. For me I think I’m funny, laid back, easy going, easy to talk to, caring, loving, and genuine. I know I have decent athletic abilities and that I am taller than most. I have interest in sports, both watching and playing. I have interest in a lot of different things, including watching chick flicks. My hobbies are working out and being with friends and then sometimes playing video games. I love to swim and I love to hike. My own sense of identity is just knowing who I am. I think it has definitely changed and developed over the course of this semester and an example I could give is that I have three songs added by Taylor Swift in my playlist. I never once listened to her until I heard the talk of her within the classroom. Also just having a better understanding of social identities, social groups, and bias that come along with the both of those have definitely helped develop who I am today and how some conversations I find myself in are led. I think my biggest takeaway from this class is to know my biases and to focus on similarities when having a conversation with someone who may be a part of a different social class. I think by being aware of my biases and by focusing on similarities I will be able to build strong relationships with just about anyone.

Finish.

This writing response shows I am able to identify meanings embedded in messages, recognize the influence of messages, and enact mindful responses to messages. This assignment consisted of reading a white pirvelage list and responding with my emotions. I did this assignment first semester of my senior year and the target audience was my professor.

Start-

09/29/2021

Writing Response #2

After reading over the white privilege list, I have a handful of emotions. I will say that most of my emotions that I am feeling are negative. One thought that I have would be that racism starts with the way you think about a different race based on their apperance. With that being said, putting white people into a category in which not all white people fall under could be considered racist. Racism is discrimination of a diffferent race and discrimination is basically the treatment of different categories of people. Other races putting the label of “white privilege” on white people would show the discrimination aimed towards white people. Another negative emotion that I have is that white people actually are labeled as “white privilege” and that a lot of the “white privilege” list is true for a some of the white race. Another negative emotion is that white people are looked at as if everything is automatically handed to them because that couldn’t be further than true for most of the white population. Probably my strongest emotion that is very negative for society is that we all view each other differently, and that the image different races have for each other is mostly negative. As far as positive emotions go, I can’t say I have any.

When it comes to communicated perspective-taking I think a huge thing is that all races need to put themselves in other races shoes, and try to feel how it would be for you if you were of a different race. This can help the learning about privilege because if people were to put themselves in others shoes they would have a different point of view on that race. To be more specific if other races were to put themselves in a white person shoes, they may realize that this said list of white privileges may not be true for all white people. Along with that, most people have tunnel vision and only one way of thinking. This can make it very challenging for different perspectives to be respected by people with a different point of view. One thing that could help this challenge is for people to agree to not agree, and stay open minded. You don’t have to have the same outlook on a said race, but you should have enough decentsy to respect the other race.

Finish.

This assignment shows I am able to identify meanings embedded in messages, recognize the influence of messages, and enact mindful responses to messages. This assignment consisted of reading a COVID-19 campaign and then describing factors that affect people when making the decision to get the vaccine or not. This assignment was done first semester of my senior year and my targeted audience was my professor.

Start-

05/12/2021

Final Paper

The campaign that I chose to write on is the first campaign on the list and is called The HHS COVID-19 public education campaign. This is a national campaign and its purpose is to increase the confidence and knowledge of the public when it comes to the COVID-19 vaccine. One of the campaigns main goal is to increase the uptake on getting the COVID-19 vaccine while preaching the basic guidelines of COVID-19 such as staying six feet away and wearing a mask. The campaigns nationwide network is filled with trusted and consistent messengers through a public health, fact-based messaging system. This part of the campaign helps to ensure that the public has all of the correct information to be able to make decisions in regards to COVID-19 and their health. Throughout this paper we are going to be looking at the specific behaviors that this campaign is asking of its audience along with the campaigns targeted audience.

People of all ages and backgrounds stand to benefit from getting the vaccine and increasing their knowledge of it as it is at the forefront of the world. These benefits include becoming immune to COVID-19, getting closer to a normal world as more people become vaccinated, slowing the spread of the virus, and helping health workers in their profession. People around the world are already participating in the vaccination process. The vaccination efforts centered around people that were most at risk for the virus such as the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. They are being vaccinated and seeing great benefits from it. While many of that population have become involved in the vaccination process, there are still many people that have not participated in it. Many of the youth have not participated in this process for different reasons. One of those reasons might be that they feel that they are less at risk for the virus so they don’t feel the need to get it. Even if they don’t feel at risk to the virus others such as loved ones around them may be at risk.

The most important factor that relates to the health issue and recommended behaviors from the campaign would be getting the vaccination. The United States government is providing anyone who lives in America with the COVID-19 vaccine free of charge. There is a huge population of people already getting vaccinated and taking advantage of the free vaccination in hopes to keep themselves and their communities safe. On the other hand, there is still a large population of people who are not taking advantage of the free vaccination. There could be many reasonings on why someone may not want to get the vaccination. One of those reasons already mentioned above, and in my opinion the most popular reason, would be that certain people don’t feel as at risk when it comes to COVID-19. This population consists of the younger generations, specifically teenagers and people in their low to mid 20’s. What these people don’t realize is that whether or not they feel at risk to COVID-19 they could still affect many of their loved ones along with the elderly within their communities.

Another very important factor that relates to the health issue and recommended behaviors from the campaign would be the general stay safe guidelines such as wearing a mask and social distancing. This relates to getting the vaccination because the large population of people who are participating in getting vaccinated are the same people being cautious and following the stay safe guidelines. Again, this population consists of the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. The same population from above, teenagers and people in their low to mid 20’s, makes up most of the population that is not taking these stay safe guidelines as seriously. The younger population is obviously much more active than the elderly when it comes to social interactions which is why I believe this is the population of people who could potentially be labeled as non participants.

When imagining what a single person participating in this campaign may consist of, I think of an older male/female. For the sake of this paper my character is going to be a male. His name is Tod and he has recently retired from a finance company, he has been retired for roughly four to five years now. He used to be a great athlete when he was younger but as he grew older he began to gain weight and started to become unhealthier than normal. Tod really values his family and friends along with his community. Tod has 8 grandkids along with three sons of his own and he loves spending time with all of them. Sense COVID-19 hit Tod has felt like he needs to be isolated from them, along with anyone else, because he is at risk when it comes to COVID-19. This is a very negative feeling for Tod because he enjoys and loves every moment he gets to spend with his family but now with the vaccine, he is very thankful because once he is vaccinated he can spend quality time with his family and friends.

Looking at the Social Cognitive Theory, we know that there are two parts. The first part is the internal factors which consist of knowledge, skills, emotions, and habits. With Tod participating in this campaign we can assume his knowledge is high when talking about COVID-19. We can also assume that he is dealing with sorrowful emotions because he has to isolate himself from his loved ones. By him isolating himself we see that his skills are good enough to overcome the habit of seeing and being around his loved ones. The second part of the Social Cognitive Theory would be the environmental factors. Environmental factors consist of social approval, physical environment, and institutional rules. Tod would be gaining social approval from the campaign and all of the advertising on COVID-19 along with the guidelines to stay safe. He has put himself in a great environment to not get COVID-19 and has been following all of the stay safe guidelines.

Now, looking at the Health Belief Model we know that there are five steps within this model. Those five steps being, we will be adversely affected if we do not change, the adverse effects will be considerable, behavior change will be effective in preventing the undesired outcome, the effort and cost of preventive behavior is worthwhile, and we are moved to action by a novel or eye-opening occurrence. Tod knew that if he didn’t change the way he was living he would be putting himself at risk of getting COVID-19. Tod, like any other person, has seen how bad COVID-19 can really affect someone, sometimes leading to death. Seeing this on the news is what I would consider Tod’s eye-opening occasion. With all that being said, Tod’s reaction to the public health topic and this campaign is great. He has taken all of the precautions seriously and really built his knowledge on COVID-19 to help himself and his family members stay safe.

To focus on more of the campaign, we are going to evaluate one of their ads. The ad that I chose is a 30 second long video and it really captures it’s audience with the music that is being played in the background. The music starts off sad and then gradually sounds happier. “It’s Time”, is the title of the ad which is a pull factor. It’s time for what? The year 2020 brought us all to the brinks and it’s now time to fight back. How? The vaccine. When the ad begins, it starts with an image stating, “closed until further notice”, and continues to have images stating things related to COVID-19. The images being shown is the information they are giving the audience to be able to understand the topic. With the ad only being 30 seconds there is only a brief amount of information to be obtained which will likely result in the viewers trying to find more information, almost like a cliffhanger. The ad also starts off very sad and ends very happily which I think will motivate people to try and find additional information as well because they want to be able to smile like the people in the ad. The ad also tells the audience exactly where they can find additional information because they put a link at the end of the ad which will lead the people straight to the campaign that I am focussing on.

For the online platform of this campaign, I found it very easy to navigate through the platform. Everything on the platform is labeled and easy to read which helps the navigation process especially because it is nationwide, therefore you have different languages and different tabs to click on if you are trying to find a specific thing. The information throughout this platform is mostly in writing, which means a lot of reading. There is some information that is in video format such as the ads, but most of the important information comes from reading. The information in this campaign is very well done. I thought I knew a lot about COVID-19 until I started exploring this platform. It is packed with information in regard to COVID-19 and feels very complete. The thing that was most compelling to me is the fact that the website is nationwide and the varieties the campaign has to offer. Another thing that was very compelling to me would be the toolkits they offer. A specific toolkit that I looked at was aimed at/ for nurses. The toolkit comes with a ton of easy downloads such as a why you should get the COVID-19 vaccination.

With COVID-19 being a worldwide pandemic and this campaign being focused on COVID-19 it really keeps the interaction levels high. All of the information and knowledge that you need to know about COVID-19 is somewhere inside of this campaign. I also think that is what keeps people inspired to continue interacting with this campaign. The amount of information to be obtained from this campaign is a lot, and with the people that are participating and staying safe, I would think they would keep interacting with this platform.

All of the material ties in with the main health topic, COVID-19. It doesn’t matter where you navigate to, through this campaign, it will always be something about COVID-19. I believe this campaign could have done better in terms of reaching the younger population. This campaign seems like it’s aimed at an older population because when you go through the platform most of the models/people shown are adults. I think this campaign could have shown more of a younger population along with the older population in hopes to attract more people of the younger generations. I believe this campaign is very unique in its own way. Like I said above, the toolkits were a great addition and separate this camping from others. This campaign was very creative in my eyes and had a lot of great information and knowledge to go along with the uniqueness.

To conclude, this paper talked a lot about The HHS COVID-19 Public Education Campaign. Throughout this paper we analyzed the audience that this campaign was aimed at and critically thought about who would be participating. Our theory consists of the older population such as the eldery and people with compromised immune systems. We related the Social Cognitive Theory and the Health Belief Model to our made up character Tod. We know that people of all ages and backgrounds stand to benefit from getting the vaccine and through this campaign they can increase their knowledge on COVID-19 as it is at the forefront of the world. This campaign is also nationwide which means the entire world can benefit from this campaign and we can soon be back to our “normal” way of living. I thought this campaign was very unique and had a lot of great information and knowledge packed into it.

Work Cited

DuPré, A., & Overton, B. C. The main part of ethos is establishing credibility. Credibility is how the audience views Seth Rogan and his reputation. Seth Rogan has a very good reputation for himself in which he built through his phenomenal acting and comedian careers. Seth Rogan is someone the audience finds worthy enough to listen to. There are three components to ethos. The first being trustworthiness, then competency, and finally goodwill. As Seth opened up about his personal experiences with Alzheimer’s disease he built trust with his audience. This also leads into competency because he is now more knowledgeable about Alzheimer’s disease than he was before. He explains what he thought the disease was like and then continued to explain what it is really like. He did not know the extreme of the disease until his mother-in-law was diagnosed with it. Through his presentation, he showed he was knowledgeable and shared his personal experiences about Alzheimer’s disease. Rogan also showed his goodwill by explaining his charity foundation he had started to help people who are dealing with the disease. His charity foundation is called Hilarity for Charity. He also wanted to share his story with the world so people who are going through similar scenarios don’t feel alone.

Pathos was used throughout Rogan’s presentation through emotional appeals. His story in which his mother-in-law suffered from Alzheimer’s disease is very sad. The audience not only felt bad about his personal experiences with dealing with the disease but also keeping others in mind who may be going through a similar situation. Rogan closed his presentation with pathos especially because he talked about how the Alzheimer’s community is a whisper and how we need to yell and scream until it finally gets the attention and funding that it needs and deserves. This is an example of pathos because it makes the audience feel like they could be doing more to help people in need.

Logos was also used throughout Rogan’s presentation. He structured his presentation around his personal experiences with the disease and then talked about supporting evidence on how he is trying to help people with Alzheimer’s. Rogans charity foundation is the evidence that supports his claim of wanting to help those in need, especially when it come to Alzheimer’s disease. He also realized that the presentation was sad and incorporated some jokes and humor throughout his presentation.

Finish.

This assingment shows that I am able to identify meanings embedded in messages, recognize the influence of…
