Learning about how people communicate with one another has definitely helped me grow as a person. Since I learned about the multiple forms of communication and understanding the entire message that someone is saying, I have been able to better understand people’s needs, wants, and what they are actually trying to tell me.

During my time at college, I specifically concentrated in communication. However, I did take a variety of classes that looked more at the media aspect of communication. Some of the topics that I studied include nonverbal communication, small group communication, media law and regulations, and intimate relationships and media. These classes also allowed me to engage in different scholarly perspectives. The majority of the material that I engaged with was social scientific research, but I also got experience with critical thinking perspectives as well.

Besides the classroom, I was able to apply my communication skills in my jobs, clubs that I am a part of, and with my friends. In all of these situations, I was able to communicate with others to best solve problems, help incoming freshmen in needs, and plan community events. After graduation, I will be using my developed communication skills while working as a crisis advocate at Golden House, in which I will be helping victims of domestic violence with their current situations.

Ever since the first communication class I took, I have loved being a student of communication and media studies.
