My name is Henry Metz and I am a Senior at St. Norbert College who majored in Communication Studies with a minor in both Spanish and Leadership Studies. 

Why I became a Communication Studies major was because I desired to advance my communication skills and better understand how individuals, groups, organizations, and my own communication vary depending on context. During my time as a Communication major, I learned several practical skills such as public speaking, working in groups, writing papers, and meeting deadlines. Additionally, I practiced many soft skills such as better recognizing relational parameters, people of different identities, what particular nonverbals communicate, and how to mitigate conflict. Personally, I have seen myself progress in quality of work, paper writing, and participating in more effective communication due to my understanding of the several facets involved. Professionally, I believe that I learned necessary skills such as practicing public speaking, working in groups, and time management.  Throughout my time I participated in social scientific research through analyzing various social scientific qualitative studies aiming to find similarities between communication tendencies. Outside of the classroom, I have been able to develop my communication skills at Asahi Global where I worked the summer of 2021 as a door-to-door salesman selling fiber optics. I utilized my learned communication skills through Interpersonal Communication, Conflict Communication, and Nonverbal Communication to build a relationship with the client, understanding their body language, and overcoming objections. I partnered my Communication major with a Leadership Studies minor because post-graduation down the line I hope to get into a leadership role where I work directly with a team under me. Currently, I am most interested in becoming an Operations Manager immediately following graduation. 

The classes that can account for my understanding of the various facets of communication include Principles of Mass Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Conflict Communication, Communication Research Methods, Writing for Media, Nonverbal Communication, Health Communication, Media Psychology, Political Communication, Business and Professional Speaking, and Communication Theory.
