What I have learned over the years is how to generally be a better person in general from this major. I learned how to understand the way people work, why we do what we do, what influences us to say/choose/do certain things, why we dress or decorate the way we do, who we do and do not trust, understand groups, verbal and nonverbal communication, general concepts of identity, and conflict. This major has changed me so much! I have become a natural leader who has good public speaking and social skills. I was not before, I was a shy girl who could barely talk to anyone. Now I am a coordinator that can lead meetings, a team, and run a college program. All because of the things I have learned in my time here as a Communication and Media Studies major. I also learned the media side and the importance of marketing and advertisement through my job on campus. Along with the huge role media plays in our society. It has forever changed the way we communicate and live so being able to understand its effects and what it does for us is amazing knowledge to have for any career.

In my time here my focus or concentration has been on communication. With this, I did have some experience in Media Studies, enough to know and understand its importance. However, by concentrating on Communication, I learn the functionality, or blueprints if you will of humans and the fact that we are constantly in communication with one another whether we are trying to or not. For instance, I had got the opportunity to go into courses that introduced me to a multitude of topics. Such as family communication, conflict communication, small group communication, intimate relationships & media, nonverbal communication, communication research methods, and principles of communication. Through all of these courses, I have taken at Saint Norbert College. Moreover, thinking about the scholarly perspectives I have engaged in, there has been a good amount in my four years at SNC. These perspectives mostly reside in research I have done for class or extra credit with my Communication and media studies courses. For instance, with the research methods class, I took this spring semester of my sophomore year. In this course, we were required to conduct research on a topic of our choosing. I focused on the invisibility of Native Americans, and from this, I was able to do my first research study and be able to apply social aspects of the culture and race along with critical research on how they are presented in media/in general. Another example would be a critical analysis of conflict in college, this ranged from socially, intimately like roommates, athletically, and academically in a classroom. In this project, it was a group research project, we decided to create a podcast and we brought on guests that go to SNC both being African American males that were in football. So being able to take their perspective and my group members as well. Really helped us to take a socially scientific study and apply it to other critical research.

Furthermore, after graduation this spring, I am interested in pursuing becoming a private event/program coordinator with my degree from St. Norbert. That is kind of what I have been doing during my time here with STAR and I have become really good at it from everything I have learned and practiced during these four years. So really, it would be a loss of a talent or skill not to. Consequently, this helped with my outside-of-class experience, this campus job helped me learn more about the functioning of social groups, new environments/experiences, and communication. That also gave me the opportunity to apply my course information to a job right away and see how that knowledge worked in real life/time.

When I think about what it means to be a Communication and media studies student I think about how I learn to better understand people and how to communicate with them, of course.
