MY WORK

Evidence engaging in communication inquiry:

Small group communication (COME 222) → Throughout class, we had to solve problems as a group like we were in a “work setting” and come together to make a presentation about a controversial topic persuading others to see the side that all of us did. During class, we had to get into groups and stay in them all semester, solving problems as a group and deciding what action to take on a topic. This taught us to work together in a simulation like you were in a work setting, to have you see others’ sides and have an understanding of someone’s thoughts other than yours. Our presentation was on — and everyone had a role throughout the presentation. I had the role of mediator, where I discussed and had introductions to each of the theories the next person was going to discuss and when the audience had any questions, direct them to the correct presenter to answer.

Business and Professional Speaking (COME 322)  → Throughout the semester, we were working on our public speaking and all of the cues of what and what not to do. We were taught how to talk in front of big groups and utilize what we learned to better our speeches and know what to say or talk about on a whim. At the end, we had to give a big presentation using those skills learned, and bring knowledge to others on the topic. We had to give a big presentation in front of our class about something that we were passionate about and inform and try to persuade others into thinking the same thing. I chose to do a presentation on Why Drinking Soda is bad for you. Integrating all of the research I have done throughout the semester, and my life because I haven’t drank soda for, now, 9 years

Evidence showing messages appropriate to the audience, purpose, and context:

Writing for Media (COME 252) → For all of the semester, I had to write press releases that were appropriate for the audience to hear and give them knowledge on a topic as well. Given the notes of the prior class to help us write an appropriate press release and given a topic every week to write on, it really dug into my creative writing skills. Making sure that everything was politically and socially correct was the toughest part, because there are so many different aspects that you have to put into consideration when writing a piece that could be displayed on the new

Persuasion Communication (COME 324) → We made a commercial to influence the viewers to go on our side of what we thought of a topic. We got put into groups of about three-four students, and chose a topic that was well known and could make a commercial telling them the complete opposite of what happens in that company and what they don’t want us knowing. My group chose to do a commercial on everything that is wrong with SeaWorld. Making a paper to help present our ideas more and give more information and notes on why we chose that topic and how we found our resources. Then presenting to the class a commercial of what we thought the most prevalent information was about SeaWorld

Media Effects (COME 352) → In a two person group, we had to analyze a topic we thought was important and make points that were valid and research why the topic was bad and engage with other media than a presentation, making flyers and other forms of information to help others know the important information. Our target audience were parents of high school kids and kids, making it known about drinking culture when it comes to high school and college.

Organizational Communication (COME 426) → We had to work with a company and help them better their communication and organization skills within their workplace and help them with constructive criticism on what they can improve on from our knowledge in class and implement it into their company workplace. As a group, we went into the company to see how it was run throughout the day and how workers felt like the atmosphere was while they were at work, and even outside of work. We got a tour of where everything was and how the building was set up. After getting the information we needed, we progressed into making a paper and presentation of everything that we thought the company needed to work on with the topic that we were given, which was Culture.

Evidence showing critically analyze messages:

Health communication (COME 327) → Help others understand the workings of healthcare and present on how they can get their name out there better and more effectively. Had to analyze and make a portfolio, having others understand what procedures need to be done in order to help make a health care setting more successful and understand the depths of what goes on in the health world.

Mass communication theory (COME 468) → Throughout the semester, we had to analyze a topic of our choice and go through the logistics and numbers of why something was produced the way it was and give people an understanding of a show other than just what’s on the screen, but a genuine description of what goes into it.
