Engagement in Communication Inquiry
Nonverbal Communication Observation Paper 1: The purpose of this paper was to put nonverbal communication theory regarding the environment and perceptual dimensions into action through observation. My partner and I each took detailed notes of the place we chose to observe and explained how the context of the places we are in informs how people interact and communicate. We both wrote our own conclusions, but worked together to gather more data by going at different times to observe the decided upon context at set times of the day to control variables as much as possible.
Nonverbal Communication Observation Paper 2: This paper was in cohesion with the first nonverbal observation paper, using the same environment to observe. This time, however, my partner and I took notes on the physical characteristics, gestures and postures of customers within our chosen environment and applied nonverbal theories to these observations.
Political Communication Final Paper: In this paper, I condensed many of the theories that I had learned throughout the semester to delve deeper into the rhetoric of inaugural addresses. I mostly focused on symbols and appeals and how they were used across party lines.
Mass Communication Theory Final Paper: This final paper will show my ability to evaluate different pieces of evidence to find a congruent conclusion. The theories I learned in this class and types of research were informative in the display of my paper and how the conclusions I found were drawn, without doing research on the topic myself. The topic I chose to look at was college recruitment and the importance of utilizing the correct social media platform.
Appropriate Construction of Communication Messages
Business & Professional Speaking Persuasive Speech Outline: This outline shows not only organizational skills and presentation preparedness, but also an understanding of how to give information effectively. I did this presentation on something I am passionate about and was able to use persuasive techniques learned in class to get my message across.
Business & Professional Speaking Persuasive Speech Powerpoint: The powerpoint for my persuasive speech is shown here. This is a demonstration on how I would organize a presentation, providing just enough insight for the viewer to understand while I work on filling in the details and logical connections through speaking and various images. Note that the actual presentation does include transitions for bullet points and photos.
Principles of Mass Communication Ad Project Powerpoint: This is another more creative piece of evidence for understanding my capabilities to communicate with a targeted audience. In fact, this presentation explains what is being hypothetically sold, who my group and I were selling it to and why that specific audience was chosen, showing my abilities to both condense information and understand who my message will reach.
Communication Facilitation Portion of Final Project: This was my portion of a semester long group project in which we were given a context of a problem to address a problem within the local communities of the designated country in creative, educational ways. While working on this write up I utilized mass communication and some crisis communication theories to guide my research and how this development package could be reproduced and presented. This is done in accordance to University College Cork guidelines as this was done during my study abroad in Ireland.
Critical Analysis
Media Law & Regulation Spotlight Film Review: As this was done for my Communication Law course, it is important to note that I was not only able to engage in the messages of communication within the film but also how this correlates to law practices. Not only did the movie convey how important verifying facts and research are in journalism and media content, but also showcased the necessity for media outlets to communicate on a broad scale to make a difference.
Media Law & Regulation People v. Larry Flynt Movie Review: This was also done for my law course and brought into question the use of media and how to determine what is ethical. I was able to gain more understanding for how ethics laws are enacted within communication and media outlets as well as reflect on my own moral code when it comes to both mass and interpersonal communication situations.
History of Media Book Review: In this report, I used some of my knowledge gained in classes from the U.S. to cater to how this book would be received and understood by different audiences. At its most basic level, this book describes the use of brand new media opportunities (radio) to communicate and influence Irish culture, going through how the invention of the radio has both helped and hindered Ireland.
Principles of Mass Communication Ad Project Paper: This paper goes along with a presentation in the previous category. The paper explains why my group chose to target the audience we did and explained how it would be successful through the messages we would be communicating.
