Having the opportunity to be a Communication and Media Studies student at St. Norbert College has allowed me to become a more efficient communicator and leader. I have learned important ways which can help me in my professional career. Specifically, the communication courses have allowed me to communicate with others and learn about multiple theories which allow us to understand the way people communicate. Being communication and media studies major has made me appreciate how important it is for us to learn how to communicate with others and learn about media through multiple different lenses. I have realized that being a communication and media major has opened many job opportunities for me. I am able to do a variety of things and have ample opportunities for careers. I decided to concentrate my studies in media and took media classes where I learned about how people communicate through the media or discuss certain issues such as race, gender, sexuality, etc. has allowed me to look at media differently. I am able to distinguish different ways in which people are using the media to get their thoughts and opinions on topics across to their audiences. I was able to in many classes engage in social scientific research through my Communication Research Methods class by conducting my own study. As well as, analyzing articles and music in other communication classes. After learning about media I have decided to intern with sports teams in the entertainment industry. Media is an important aspect of our lives as we interact with different mediums daily, even if we do not realize it. The knowledge I have gained in the classroom will help me within my career and has impacted and reinforced my decision to continue in the sports industry. I am working with the Green Bay Gamblers Hockey Team as one of the promotional/ event interns. Where I am able to help promote the team on game days and engage with fans. This internship has allowed me to gain experience in the field of media and the importance of marketing and how they use social media to advertise for their games and players. I am also interning with The Green Bay Blizzard indoor professional football team. This internship will allow me to learn more about sales and fan services, work on graphic design projects, and marketing initiatives, interact with fans, and promote on game day. I am excited to build a career in sports media/ marketing/ promotions and more. My dream would be to work with the Green Bay Packers, and am slowly working on achieving that goal.
