Portraying Race on Television: On My Block – COME 467, Fall 2022

In COME 467: Television Criticism, the final paper involved choosing a text(TV show or film) and a lens/method to analyze.  This assignment required the critical analysis of the show On My Block through the lens of portraying race on television, its messages and responding to them with research methods. I hope to bring awareness about television’s history of portraying races of diverse backgrounds, which historically have had negative portrayments, therefore impacting people of color in our society.

Oral Defense – COME 389, Fall 2022

In COME 389: Media Law and Ethics, we were assigned a law case and asked to create an oral defense for argumentation in a court setting to persuade the justices on how they should rule and why.  It involved obtaining knowledge from class material, other court cases, and a strong belief in your argumentation. This assignment required creating messages from relevant information that was obtained, along with creating in-depth analysis of how the ruling should be and why. It also involved answering communication questions through case research as finding similar court cases relevant to the situation was important to build strong argumentation.  The target audience for this project was for my professor.

Digital Storytelling – COME 384, Fall 2022

In COME 384: Comm Technology Social Change, we were asked to create a project that fell under the topic of “digital storytelling.”  My group created a parody talk show that was inspired by the Netflix show Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis.  We created satirical comedy to engage with our audience through the use of awkward situations without crossing personal boundaries, in addition to  Critically analyzing information and data that was received from the social media engagement on twitter/youtube, along with survey responses.  It allowed us to identify, interpret, evaluate, and take part in communication research through the process of engaging with our audience through social media and surveys, along with the final product of the video.  Our target audience was our professors, classmates, and other students outside of class.

JD Vance for Senate – COME 329, Fall 2022

In COME 329: Political Communication, we were assigned a final paper that required us to analyze political messages using a lens learned in class.  My objective was to use Rowland’s typology of emotional appeals to analyze messages which I chose JD Vance for Senate.  In the category of emotional appeals, I chose the appeals to basic needs, basic values, and guilt to analyze the campaign ads I focused on.  This paper pushed me to critically analyze three campaign ads from JD Vance through the language being used and the setting of the videos. I relied on critical research to apply into the analysis paper using Rowland’s methods of emotional appeals.  My target audience for this paper was my professor.

News Story #3 – COME 252, Spring 2022

In COME 252: Writing for Media, we were assigned 3 new stories to conduct and that were considered “newsworthy.”  Each story needed interviews conducted to have quotes to use for the assignment and create a meaningful story.  I covered the “Stephen Alonzo Jackson Weekend of Giving” for the Kappa Sigma fraternity which allowed me to create messages through finding and using relevant information about the event.  It required me to critically analyze the interview data to find the right content to use for my story.  I used a social scientific research method of interview to obtain the  information.  My target audience for this project was for my professor.

Health campaign – COME 327, Spring 2022

In COME 327: Health Communication, we were assigned a final paper that wanted us to choose a health campaign, then to look at any related Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) that was made.  Once these were found, we talked about the health topic description, along with analyzing the targeted audience population along with the channel of communication.  Once the information was collected, a conclusion was needed to summarize the information and state if the campaign was effective or not.  This project involves the creation of messages and critically analyzing them to further understand more.  The target audience for this project was my professor.

Survival Guide – COME 389, Fall 2022

In COME 389: Media Law and Ethics, we were assigned to create a survival guide, in other terms, in “quick reference” style from the material learned in class.  Selecting a topic to gather relevant information in a way for someone to retrieve the information quickly without having to search through large texts.  Having the topic of newsgathering, I gave an introduction of what it meant about news gathering, along with the rights/limits in gathering information.  Following the sections, I would then incorporate topics of libel and invasion of privacy.  The reader is supposed to gain knowledge quickly for the do’s and don’ts of newsgathering.  This project creates messages with the assistance of analyzing information to fully incorporate the messages in the guidebook.  Additionally, it involved utilizing social scientific research methods through the approach of case research to know the rights about news gathering and the limits as well.  The target audience for this guidebook was for my professor.

Final Paper – COME 124, Fall 2020

In COME 124: Principles of Mass Communication, we were assigned a final paper in which we had to pick a specific media artifact (movie, tv show, video game, magazine) while using ideas that were learned throughout the class.  Using ideas from the book and including responses of questions in the rubric, we had to show our understanding of the concepts from class.  Showing that understandment and analysis of the information was the objective of this assignment.  This paper required  gathering and analyzing relevant information to create a message about the topic of choice , in hopes of further explaining the concept being made.  As a result, I am pushed to  identify, interpret, evaluate, and apply with the materials chosen and discovered.  The target audience for this paper was for my professor.
