My Communication Works:

Social Media for Client:

I created five social media posts on four different platforms Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat for Writing for Media. The posts were for my hypothetical client, Habitat for Humanity mimicking what it would be like to run the social media accounts. The aim of the practice was to tailor the specific announcement to a social media platform that was most appropriate as well as creating professional, informative, and concise posts. Facebook was utilized to give a professional update on a new home built, Twitter was used to thank volunteers and promote fundraisers, Instagram was used to provide updates after an event, and finally Snapchat was used to provide live updates. The audience for the project would be the followers of Habitat for Humanity on several different platforms with the aim to keep them updated and informed on new occurrences in the organization. This project fulfills learning objective number one because it has the specific purpose to mimic and practice writing styles friendly to different kinds of social media platforms.

I was worried I was only going to get images of posts.  Good analysis on your posts as well. (Todd Hauser, November 2021)

Women Build #2021:

I created a feature news story in Writing for Media on a hypothetical client, Habitat for Humanity, highlighting a fundraiser that took place in 2021. The pieces name was Women Build #2021 and aimed to promote the audience to be involved in making donations to the fundraiser, participating in volunteering experiences, and honor the women in the organization. The intended audience for the news story would be the general public, particularly women who want to make a difference in their community. This piece falls under the first learning objective because it has a specific purpose to promote the client, Habitat for Humanity, to the public in hopes to gain more participation.

Excellent article and great use of your non-profit opportunity. (Todd Hauser, December 2021)

How do college students use social media?:

This was a collaborative group paper for Communication Research Methods in which we aimed to understand how college students use social media. The aim of the study was to understand which forms of social media students prefer, how they utilize different forms of social media, and the purpose of their social media usage. The evidence can be utilized to better understand Generation Z and after’s usage and purpose of social media in their daily life. The intended audience for this piece was for organizations who attempt to appeal to Generation Z and below on social media. The piece fulfills both learning objectives two and three because it required specific research on the topic as well as analyzing the data to draw conclusions.

“Group: you did a wonderful job with this paper. It was really a great read and it was clear that you put in a lot of time and effort to make this a great final product. Content-wise, it’s really strong, and really only has a few “cleaning up” points reflected in my feedback above. I hope you are proud of the work you have done!” (Kim Smith, May 2021)

International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies:

I wrote this paper for Health Communication in which I explore the newly implemented, since 2019, International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. In this paper I highlight the negative effects of unclean air on human health and further the call for taking action in environmental preservation to mitigate further health effects. Finally, I look into the successful communication tactics utilized within the webpage such as the creation of PSAs and the get involved in the fight tab. The audience for this study would be the entire public because we are all negatively affected by the health implications of the continuously degrading environment. The paper demonstrates both learning objective two and three because I had to do additional research on the negative effects of the environment on human health and then analyze how this directly relates to what people should derive from International Day of Clean Air and Blue Skies.

The Misrepresentations of Minorities in Media:

The podcast for Media Psychology was a creative way to understand the first hand experience of African Americans who see the misrepresentation of their people in the media. I interviewed Wayne King II, an active member on campus, involved in Black Student Union, Kappa Sigma, Residential Assistant, Swim and Dive, and Track and Field on his perceptions of how African Americans are misrepresented in the media. The podcast aims at raising awareness for these misrepresented minorities in the media and how the media is skewed in an attempt to affirm inaccurate stereotypes. The audience of this podcast would be the general public as this information is not commonly known, however more specifically white individuals who may believe some of these misrepresented stereotypes. This podcast falls under the first learning objective because it aims to explore the effects of a particular facet of media on the misrepresentation of minorities.

Your podcast was interesting and conversational. The biggest issue that I noted was that research that you used wasn’t the best for the purpose. A lot of the studies weren’t conducted in the U.S., and some of them weren’t social scientific, which was an important part of the assignment. In regard to the quality of the podcast itself, it could have used a bit of editing to tighten it up and also some music at the beginning and end would have made it a bit more professional sounding. I appreciate the direction that you took with this in terms of shedding light on an important issue. Ultimately, there were just some things that didn’t quite align with the assignment. Rally the Redhawk Ad:

The aim of this Political Communication advertisement was to be an attack on Rally the Redhawk, Ripon college’s mascot who in this case was hypothetically running against Norby Knight for Wisconsin Governor. The advertisement utilized several specific tactics such as black and white framing, eerie music, and extreme assumptions of facts, to paint Rally as a monster and therefore discourage the voters from voting for him. The project taught me how to create an advertisement, paint a public figure in a negative light, and to recognize different forms of political advertisements in the media. The intended audience of the piece was voters in the hypothetical upcoming election particularly appealing to those affiliated with Wisconsin colleges. The project fulfills the first learning objective because the purpose of the piece was to convince an audience to make a certain choice and therefore focused on one topic in hopes to dissuade the audience.

This was a lot of fun and succeeded in reminding me that I don’t like Ripon. You accomplished a whole bunch without using a voiceover or very much video footage. The production techniques are consistent with those of actual negative political ads. The sounds and grainy visuals are good for evoking emotion. (Mark Glantz, December 2022)

Monstrous Political Advertisements on both sides:

I wrote a paper for Political Communication on the usage of framing the other candidate as a monster in the 2020 election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The intention of the piece is to demonstrate how on both sides the campaigns will intentionally depict the opposing candidate as a monster in their advertisements through the usage of black and white, extreme close ups, and using specific quotes. The objective of the paper is to understand how regardless of political alignment both sides utilize attack advertisements to paint the other candidate as a monster. The audience of the piece would be the general voting population because it confirms that both sides use particular cinematic choices to make the viewer negatively associate with the politician. This paper was heavily focused on analyzing particular advertisements and how they present candidates as monsters which fulfills learning objective number two.

Good work providing direct quotes from the ads. Clear understanding of Monsters in politics. good explanations. Well organized. (Mark Glantz, December 2022)

Legalization of Marijauna:

I gave my final persuasion speech for Business and Professional Speaking on the legalization of marijuana in the United States. This speech helped me practice following an outline, conducting an effective speech starting with an introduction, three main points with subpoints, and a conclusion. The speech highlights the financial, health, and positive social effect of marijuana with the objective to persuade the listener to legalize the substance. The intended audience of this speech was my class because that is where I presented it, however the target audience outside the classroom would be those involved in politics at a higher level. This speech required conclusive research supporting the topic that also needed to be analyzed to draw conclusions and therefore covered both learning objectives two and three.

A job well done on a topic that is somewhat controversial. You put together useful arguments and typically used quantitative evidence to support. I’ve enjoyed observing your presentations throughout the semester, Henry. You have a knack for engaging individuals and maintaining their attention! (Anna Antos, December 2022)

Theory Application: Communication Theory of Identity:

I did a presentation on these slides for Communication Theory on the Communication Theory of Identity. For this presentation I analyzed and presented on a particular study, Dissonance, detachment and college student identity: an exploration of identity gaps in the emerging majority student, bringing it into context of Communication Theory of Identity. The study focused on the alteration of a student’s personal and relational identities when entering college. The audience for the presentation was my class and professor, however the target audience of the presentation would be professors and first year college students so that they would understand the identity changes that may come with the transition to college. The presentation covers the third learning objective because I present and do critical research on the Communication Theory of Identity.
