Let’s Reflect

What it means to me to be a student of Communication and Media Studies is to continuously learn new things about marketing media to different target audiences along with the studies and theories behind the way they’re presented in real life situations.

Being a student of Communication and Media Studies has impacted me personally by being more aware of Communication Theories in everyday life and understanding the purpose behind each one. It’s also impacted me personally by knowing the trends in media that come up in our feed has meaning behind it. It’s overall made me have a better outlook and understanding of the major by constantly thinking about the how and the why.

Professionally, the major has impacted me in ways where I can take my previous knowledge and apply it to almost anything I can think of like customer service and the way that words need to be carried in a respectful manner, working on set teams to work together to get the job done with specific and constant communication, and even when working on social media to change the tone.

I concentrated my discipline in the Media Studies side of the major. Studying a range of courses that helped me decide what I wanted to do after graduation. I studied for the Communication side of the discipline Communication Research, Principles of Mass Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Social Identity and Intergroup Communication, Mass Communication Theory and Family Communication. For the Media side of the discipline I studied Communication Technology Social Change, Intimate Relationships and Media, Student Media Cooperative, and Television Criticism. I had the opportunity to take more of my media courses while studying abroad like, Social Media,  and Art, Food Fashion and Wine: Creative Advertising. Other courses that I took that I thought would benefit me further in my career are Introduction to Photography, Professional Writing, Business and Professional Speaking, Introduction to Leadership Studies, Introduction to Film, and Rock & Roll Movies.

The scholarly perspectives that I had engaged with during my time at St. Norbert College was critical and social scientific research.

I am interested in pursuing a professional career in Marketing.

The experiences outside of the classroom that helped me learn along the way was an internship at Bedford Paper, campus media in the Student Media Cooperative course offering, Studying Abroad, undergraduate research, and working at NBC26.
