I first became interested in Communication when I was 14 years old. That summer, I was offered an internship at Oneida Tourism. I mostly did office work, but the best part was tagging along with my co-workers to all of the events they had put on in the community. I did everything from going on tours of the reservation to working tents at the Green Bay Packer’s events. I decided then that this was what I wanted to go into.
I have experienced the large campus and bigger class sizes at Marquette University, and I strived for the ability to converse in classes and to have more input offered from my peers. The best part of being a student at St. Norbert College is the small class sizes and the relationships you build with your professors. Being a Communication and Media major at SNC means all of this and more. Throughout my time here, I have learned theories, research techniques, the ability to think critically about media, and tons more through essays, research, and content.
Even before becoming a Communication and Media major, I knew communication was difficult but I did not fully understand the complexity behind it. Two classes specifically, Health Communication and Intercultural Communication, have taught me that communication differs in context and we must be able to adjust whether that be due to a number of different factors. Classes such as Conflict Communication and Interpersonal Communication have really impacted by everyday relationships. I have learned to communicate more effectively and I feel prepared to take that out into the workplace.
Media is a huge part of my everyday life and I have been interested in it since the day I started using it. Through taking Television Criticism, Communication Technology and Social Change, Gender and Media, and Media Effects, I am continuously learning multiple tools and theories that have and will continue to help me gain more perspective on technology and the effects it has on us personally and in our society. I hope to one day take all of the knowledge I have learned here at SNC and bring it out into my career path.
I am in my final year, one more semester to go after this Spring semester. My plans after graduation are to enter into the field right away. I am being open to many options right now, which I am so grateful my major has so many opportunities offered. Ideally, I would like to bring my education back to my hometown reservation, Stockbridge-Munsee, or the Oneida reservation where I have spent most of my life.
