What does it mean to be a student of Communication and Media Studies?

As a Communication and Media Studies student at St. Norbert College, I have learned various skills that have helped prepare me for the next chapter of my life.
Each Communication and Media Studies course required me to push myself and think outside the box. I learned the importance of being open to a wide array of ideas and how having that mindset is essential when going into a field like Communication. I have also learned about the positive and negative impacts of media, which has taught me how to use media effectively and constructively.
Additionally, each class allowed me to expand my capabilities with numerous applications and projects, which was illustrated through final project that showcased my learning over the semester. This process encouraged me to engage with different platforms I had not beforehand.
When I graduate in May of 2022, I will be a Communication and Media Studies Major with a concentration in Media Studies. This concentration focused on the critical aspects of media in society and how this affects people’s everyday perspectives and interactions. Media constantly sends out messages that we as viewers do not often take the time to dissect, so having this opportunity to evaluate the implicit and explicit messages gave me better insight into society’s values.
I also engaged with numerous scholarly perspectives when learning about how individuals interpret and engage with media. For example, in multiple courses, I have examined the effects of gender stereotypes and gender roles in media on young viewers.
After graduation, I plan to enter a career in Marketing, Advertising, or Sales. Throughout my time at St. Norbert College, I have had the opportunity to be a Marketing and MultiMedia intern for multiple companies. These experiences helped shape my understanding of what career path I wanted to follow. In addition, I also was able to utilize the skills I have acquired from my Communication and Media Studies courses. As time goes on, I plan to take each of these experiences and what I have learned to assist me as I navigate life after college.
