COME 122: Interpersonal Communication (Fall 2021)
For this course, I wrote a scholarly journal abstract on an article that focused on negotiating relationships in single-mother households. This scholarly journal abstract critically analyzed research information, providing an in-depth literature review, methods, discussion, and evaluation of the journal article. The main objective of this project was to critically examine social scientific research and disseminate that information via a professionally written scholarly journal abstract. Additionally, the target audience of this scholarly journal abstract was my professor, Dr. Antos.
COME 124 A: Principles of Mass Communication (Spring 2022)
In Principles of Mass Communication, I created a poster about my grandpa’s mass media usage throughout the decades. More specifically, I interviewed my grandpa about his mass media experiences with sound recording/radio, television/movies, and digital devices/internet. The primary objective of this poster project was to conduct research via an interview with my grandpa and create a poster to share that information with my classmates, who served as the target audience. This poster project demonstrates thoughtful engagement with research through the dissemination of an oral history on media usage.
COME 180: Communication Research Methods (Spring 2022)
For this course, I wrote a literature review on the negative effects of problematic internet usage. More specifically, this literature review focused on research regarding social media sites, dating applications, metal health, and cyber victimization. The primary objective of this project was to critically analyze and summarize research findings based on a compilation of social scientific research studies. Furthermore, this literature review disseminated important research findings to a target audience, which in this case, was my professor, Dr. Smith.
COME 305: Social Identity and Intergroup Communication (Fall 2022)
For this course, I created an infographic about navigating diverse racial identities within interracial families. The primary objective of this project was to apply intergroup communication research and theory to real-world issues today. This project involved multiple steps throughout the semester, including a topic proposal, article selection, and annotated bibliography. For this project, I chose to focus on interracial families because I believe racial identities are a salient context of study, especially amid the growing population of multiracial individuals. Additionally, my research project targeted parents within interracial families, as it disseminates relevant information and tips for how parents can approach communication and dialogue across racial differences via an infographic.
COME 315: Conflict Communication (Spring 2023)
In conflict communication, I designed a brochure for parents on how to navigate parent-child conflict amid the transition to college. The main objective of this project was to engage in social scientific research about conflict communication and dissemination research findings to the public. For this project, I read ten social scientific research articles about parent-child conflict during the college transition, completed an annotated bibliography, and created a brochure to disseminate information. A brochure served as the best way to distribute research findings to parents, who served as the target audience for this research.
COME 322: Business and Professional Speaking (Fall 2022)
In Business and Professional Speaking, I gave an impromptu speech, providing others with information about my travel experiences. More specifically, the primary objective of this assignment was to present a two minute impromptu speech to inform listeners, in this case my professor and classmates, about one of my passions or hobbies. For this speech, I talked about my trip to Alaska, Las Vegas/Grand Canyon, and Caribbean cruise. Throughout this course, I worked on building professional presentation skills, delivering impromptu, informative, and persuasive presentations.
COME 389: Media Psychology
For this course, I designed a brochure that informed parents about children’s parasocial relationships (PSRs) with media characters. A brochure served as an effective way to disseminate information about children’s PSRs to parents, who remained the target audience for this research project. Throughout this research project, I read numerous social scientific research articles, synthesizing the information and findings to present within the brochure.
COME 427: Communication Theory (Spring 2023)
In Communication Theory, I chose to create a presentation on Communicated Narrative Sense-Making Theory (CNSM) and History. For this presentation, I focused on the role storytelling plays in helping people make sense of their lives and histories, especially in the wake of historically traumatic events. The main objective of this semester-long capstone project was to research a theory and apply that research to real-world problems/questions. For my capstone project, I took an interdisciplinary research approach, combining my interest in Communication and History to create a presentation on History and CNSM Theory. Additionally, I presented my capstone project at a communication presentation night where students gave their oral presentation to communication/media studies professors and students.
