Projects

TV Pilot Script

Senior year, I had the opportunity of writing an original script for a TV Pilot episode. When I started this project, I had no idea how to even start with which format to use or how to create characters or scenes. The audience for this was my professor, but the audience could also be anyone looking for new show ideas. While creating this, I also learned how to write for other forms of media (radio, TV, print, social media). This entire course and this project taught me how to write for a specific audience while knowing that the audience of the show won’t see my notes in the script or information about the scenes. I also learned how to emphasize messages through specific camera angles or dialogue.

Pets in Family Infographic

My “Incorporating Pets in Family” infographic was one of the first projects I ever completed for my major in Communications & Media Studies. Fall semester of my junior year was based around communication theories, so at this time, family communication was a huge topic for that entire semester. Usually when people think about family, they think about the people in their family and not their pets. Research shows that pets play a huge role in family support, so I decided to make a project that included them into the family and showed the benefits that came from having pets in the family. The target audience for this was schools and family members. Because of this project, I learned how to create messages appropriate for the audience, critically analyze messages and mindfully respond to them by compiling research, and of course, answering communication questions using appropriate research methods for social science topics (family structures and communication practices).

Research Proposal

For my Senior capstone project, I decided to make a research proposal that examines the relationship between ToS/Privacy policies, time spent reading them, and the amount of platform engagement. Currently, there isn’t a lot of research on how knowledge of privacy policies impact the amount of data submitted by consumers. This proposal provides a way of conducting research surrounding this topic and why it’s important. Because of this project, I learned how to create messages appropriate for the audience (researchers and journals), critically analyze messages and mindfully respond to them by compiling research, and of course, answering communication questions using appropriate research methods for social science topics.

Mass Communication Poster – Jazz it Up!

When I was taking introductory communications and media courses, I learned about different types of media and their histories. For the final project, I had to teach other students in the class about the history of the medium I chose through a lens. Because of my background in music, I decided to learn more about radio and the evolution of jazz while focusing on the importance of both in society. My poster mostly focused on the big band era and the effect Jazz had on both World Wars. In this project, I had to recognize the influence of the medium and compile the information surrounding this topic into one poster, and I had to answer questions about the rise and fall of Jazz and radio using appropriate research methods, while also making sure the information could fit into a poster.

Booklet from Media Psychology

For this booklet, my team and I were focusing on the effects of the media on mental health. Three of the main topics were adaptations of perceived media (how people use it and why), parasocial interactions and parasocial relationships. The target audience for this project was the professor and our goal was to create a project that could be used in a healthcare setting. This was created at the end of my spring semester Junior year, or the end of my first year in Communications and Media. In this project, I learned how how to create messages appropriate to the audience, purpose and context (we used a booklet instead of a video because it mainly focuses on negative effects of media), I learned how to identify meanings in messages (such as the psychological effects of characters in TV, the meanings of fandoms), and I learned how to answer communication questions regarding the above social science topics.

Ron Johnson Ad

First semester of my Senior year, I had to create a political ad with a few of my classmates. My teammates decided to make one about Ron Johnson, so I just took the idea and went with it. In the ad, I had to make the visuals and the sound on GarageBand, then imported that sound over the videos I clipped together on WeVideo, and then the ad was done. The target audience for this ad was my professor and classmates. By making this ad, I learned how to create messages appropriate to the purpose (defame a political character/persuade an audience to vote for a different party) and I learned how to identify meanings of other ads in order to create my own, including sound choice, camera angles and other visuals.

Conflict Management in Schools Infographic

While learning about social identity and intergroup communication my Senior year, I decided to build an infographic focusing on the different conflict management styles and techniques between age generations in schools. This also explains some of the techniques between different positions in the same generation and how they differ in communication practices to other generations. I decided on this topic because I knew more about adapting communication to other generations and removing barriers instead of some of the topics I could have picked. The target audience for this was anybody in a school setting, including administrators, teachers and students. The learning objectives of this project were to create messages appropriate for the audience, critically analyze messages (those of the students/teachers/etc..), and to answer communication questions using social scientific research methods.

TimelineUniversity

TimelineU was one of the last projects of my entire undergraduate education. During my final semester, I was learning about digital storytelling involving new media and was given the freedom to explore this topic with a high degree of freedom. The project consisted of obtaining responses in a Google Sheet, and spreading the form by using a website. The purpose of this project was to gather information on events that happened during peoples’ college years and to display it by timeline. Although we didn’t get the amount of responses we wanted, we were still able to finish the concept. The target audience were primarily previous college students, but also those interested in attending college. In order to complete this project, my group and I create messages appropriate to the context and purpose, critically analyze messages by coding responses and flagging for appropriate and probable responses.
