Being a Communication and Media studies major has been a huge part of my life here at St. Norbert College. When I first came to St. Norbert College, I had no idea what I wanted to major in, thankfully I had a lot of friends and professors that pointed me in the right direction of the Communication and Media studies major and I never looked back. Within this major, I was able to learn and understand how to communicate more effectively within the business world, and within personal relationships. Being a communication and media studies major has impacted me personally and professionally. Within my four years, I was able to understand that communication can be hard for people to understand fully. It takes a lot of time for people to understand what communication really encompasses and that it comes from deep personal understanding.
I was able to specialize in the communication side of the major, but I also dabbled in the media studies side as well. Throughout the communication side of the major, many of the topics that I was able to study were conflict communication, persuasion, small group communication, organizational communication and much more. I was able to engage with a lot of different perspectives, for example I was able to conduct some research as to how college students use and understand social media and if it is considered a good or bad thing. After graduation I would like to go into some type of media marketing. Outside of the classroom, I was able to work with and understand social media and leadership by being the Vice President of a group of almost 100 people on campus called the Canadian Cornishams. We volunteer around the community of Green Bay and De Pere and raise awareness and money for a specific organization each year. For this year, we choose to work with the Golden House. Through the years as a communication and media studies major, I have learned a lot about leadership, conflict management and how to connect with people.
