Personal Reflection
To be an effective Communication student, there is a requirement of a strong ability of contextualization, critical thinking, and ability to consume mass amounts of information. I learned how to read and write proper research articles and the abstracts that preface them. I was able to apply what I learned in the classroom to real life situations in my romantic relationship, friendships, and professional workplaces to better be engaged in the situation at hand.

I concentrated my degree strictly with Communication rather than Media Studies since I wanted to deeply dive into the theories and applications of communication more than media influence. I studied a variety of topics within this concentration, ranging from interpersonal communication, to nonverbal, small group, mass communication, and persuasion, applying parts of what I learned in my professional career and personal relationships.

I also studied different communication theories and research methods within the communication field that allowed me to find and discern information from research articles in my free time. The area of research articles I spent most my time working with was social scientific over critical since most of the theories and context we were learning in class was best demonstrated through a social scientific lense of hypotheses and testing. The only time critical research was used was in a session of finding different articles that represented what critical research was, being research that has a social change/improvement goal over practical application of theories in a testable and re-creatable way.

I am interested in pursuing a career in Information Technology, and plan to stay in a typical corporate business setting for most, if not all, of my career. What I have learned in through this Communication degree has helped further my current position in the company I work at through being able to adapt to communication on all levels, as well as understand why some people react to news, group meetings, or leadership in various ways as a result of this knowledge of communication theories and application. The information from these classes will be continued to be used and implemented in my daily life, as well as improved upon as I do more research and practical application in life.
