Reflection

As a St. Norbert College Communication and Media Studies student is being able to show your creativity through your work. Being a Communication major has given me the opportunity to grow my communication skills in a community that wants to see me succeed. As a communication major I learned the importance of interpersonal, mass, and nonverbal communication. My learning has impacted me personally because when my friends are disclosing information I am able to let them know using my body language and gestures that they have my attention. In my professional life being a communication major has made an impact on me because I understand working through disagreements while showing respect towards others. I also have learned how to conduct research while keeping my participants anonymous and not tarnishing their public face. Both personally and professionally I have learned about my public and private face and the importance of keeping both separate so by your colleges you are seen as educated and someone who should be respected. The discipline for communication I specialized in was Media Studies. Topics throughout my four years at St. Norbert college I’ve studied are knowledge gap and spiral of silence, communication research methods, public relations, advertising, social media, and much more. The scholarly perspectives I was able to engage with were  qualitative methods, social comparison theory, third person effect, critical scientific research and more. After graduation I hope to work as a social media manager, to achieve this I was able to do an internship with a music company based in Los Angeles California. With coronavirus playing a factor in my college experience I was able to do this internship remotely. Having this internship made me thankful I was a communication major because I had no problems self advocating and making sure all of my bosses’ needs were being met. I was also grateful to land a job on campus with the Center of Global Engagement where I was able to help in advertising International Education week at St. Norbert College. For this role I was able to connect with clubs on campus interested in partaking in the event as well as panel speakers for the event. My boss challenged me to communicate with many different people to get an event organized over a short period of time but with all I have learned and experienced I was able to rise to the occasion. I was an asset to their team and enjoyed putting my classroom knowledge into the workplace.
