Being a Communication & Media Studies Student
What I learned
Over my four years at St. Norbert College, I learned how to communicate effectively through the Communication and Media Studies program. I took courses that taught me how to communicate with different groups of people; such as, small and organizational groups along with communicating between two people. I learned how to handle difficult situations through conflict and crisis communication, while applying different theories of communication.
Impact on What I learned
Learning through Communication and Media Studies helped me grow personally in adapting new ways to constructively communicate with others. Looking back, my writing capabilities have grown immensely, now I am able to communicate usefully through my writing. These abilities also helped me grow professionally by allowing me to communicate with different groups of people through an organization.
Area of Discipline
Communication is my concentration, meaning my studies were strictly communication related rather than the media aspect. Some topics I invested in was communication within families after losing a loved one, communication patterns within a small group and an organization, and how communication can fix negative circumstances. While I studied more topics, I focused my attention towards social scientific research, making sure I investigate the communicative aspect towards my topics.
After Graduation
While my path in life is unknown, I plan to apply my knowledge to occupations that deal with communication and the public. I have great interest in event coordinating and public relations. This degree allows my options to be flexible, so I plan to do something that satisfies my educational goals along with my life goals.
Outside Experience
I applied the education I obtained at St. Norbert College to an internship working for the Green Bay Rockers, a summer collegiate baseball team. During this time, I learned how to correctly supervise multiple employees along with improving my customer service skills. I was in charge of different areas around the park; including, the fan services station, the picnic area, and the different beer stands. I also was in charge of getting the park ready for not only games, but for concerts, picnics, and different activities.
