Madeleine McCarty

Company: Bauer Hockey

Position: Social Media Manager

Madeline’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/madeleinemccarty/

Bauer Hockey Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bauerhockey/

Bauer Hockey has been around since 1927. Since then the company has been making skates for players from all around the world. Meet Madeleine McCarty. Madeleine has been the Social Media Manager for Bauer Hockey since January of 2023. She is a graduate of Boulder University in Colorado. I chose Madeleine because she is a female working for one of the most well known sport companies in the world. Furthermore, I decided on Madeleine because she is creating innovative ways to promote her company’s products on social media. I noticed Madeleine because she is someone who I aspire to be like especially since I myself want to eventually work in the world of hockey.

Madeleine is able to keep athletes’ private information confidential especially when it comes to posting for the company. According to an academic article written by Birkner and Nolleke, “athletes have a negative image of journalists and media in general” (2016, p. 377). This quote points out how most athletes are not a fan of interviews because the reporter tends to ask too many personal questions that the player is uncomfortable answering. Madeleine is responsible for making the players look good on the Bauer Instagram that she runs. She is also responsible for dismantling any rumors about the player. In order for her to do this she engages in what is known as co ownership. Co ownership is where a hockey player shares private information with Madeleine and she does her part of not sharing the information with anyone else on her team.

Furthermore, Madeleine is able to use players to promote upcoming events. An example of this can be seen on the Bauer Instagram page where Madeline made a post about the upcoming Dallas Stars game and she used a photo of Jake Oettinger who is the goalie for the team. When she is making her instagram posts for Bauer she is able to have different highlights on the page about the different events or teams so that fans can keep up with their favorite brand. In addition, she is able to sustain her relationships with the athletes because she has highlights of each individual one on the Bauer Instagram page. Furthermore, she is able to engage with the fans as well. An example of this is that she made an Instagram reel and asked fans to state one word that would describe Jack Hughes who plays for the New Jersey Devils. This is an example of how Madeline is able to communicate with both the fans and players.

There are a few takeaways from Madeleine that can be applied to my everyday life. The first idea that I can use is the concept of co ownership. This is a necessary  concept for me to apply especially when I am interviewing athletes in the future. Another takeaway that I can use is the idea of adapting to the needs of the player. This is important especially when it comes to keeping the athletes’ information private and out of the public’s eye. In the future Madeleine aspires to continue working for Bauer. She has optimism that more women will enter the sports world in the near future. Madeleine has faith that she will continue to open doors for women who have a passion for working in the sports industry.

Hannah Miller

Company: U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee

Position: Digital and Social Strategy Director

Hannah’s LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hannah-miller-49a06aa9/

U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee Instagram (Team USA): https://www.instagram.com/teamusa/?hl=en

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee has been around since 1894. Since then the committee has grown and expanded. The committee has done a very good job of making sure that the athletes who represent the United States at the game are prepped and know what to expect ahead of the games. Hannah Miller has been working for the committee since 2017 where she started out as the Social Media Strategy Manager. Since then she has managed to work her way up to her current position which is the Director of Digital and Social Strategy. Hannah has opened the door for women who may not want to compete in the Olympics but have a dream of working for the Olympics. I chose Hannah because I have watched the Olympics every year from a young age. In addition, I was drawn to her because I have always wanted to compete in the Olympics, and later on when I learned how much grit that was going to take I switched gears and decided that if I couldn’t compete then I would work for the games in a different way. Hence why I choose Hannah for this project as she is one example of a woman making headway in the sports world.

In addition, Hannah is responsible for reviewing the social media posts about the athletes before they go out to the public on the Team USA Instagram and Twitter. Hannah does a good job of reviewing the posts and making sure that the player’s privacy is not compromised in the post. This is an example of the same privacy dynamics noted by Pulido (2014), who found that “control of privacy on twitter and boundary rules of information on twitter predicted the athlete’s twitter usage amount” (p. 62). The above quote is very prevalent regarding what athletes as well as Hannah can post on the team USA social media pages. Hannah is also very organized in the sports world. She keeps each of the players’ posts, highlights from the game, and personal information in the highlights section on the Team USA Instagram page which she runs. In addition, she posts about important days throughout the year that are important to athletes. An example of this on the Team USA Instagram page is when she posted about mental health. In her post she uses a quote from Noah Lyles who is a track and field athlete to emphasize the importance of putting your mental health first.

Additionally, there are quite a few ideas that I am able to learn from Hannah that I plan on applying in my own future career. The first one being that I should understand what information each athlete wants out of the media’s eye. Another concept that I have learned is the importance of posting about days of the year that could have an influence on the athletes. Furthermore, I have also learned from her the concern for keeping athletes’ information private. The final concept that she has taught me to keep up my ability to be organized as that will come in handy especially in the sports world.

In the future, Hannah hopes to continue working in her current position at the Olympic and Paralympic committee here in the U.S. By staying in her current role Hannah has the power to open the door for women who aspire to one day work in the sports world. Hannah hopes that she will be able to leave her mark and be remembered in the Olympic world once she retires later on. Hannah is optimistic about the possibility of having more women enter her profession in the future. Lastly, she has confidence that the number of sports positions for women will continue to grow.

Stephanie Souza

Company: Nike

Position: Nike Global Social Media

Stephanie’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulst/

Nike Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nike/

Have you ever considered wanting to post on social media for a sportswear company but don’t know who to look for? If this sounds like you, I have the perfect person for you! Meet Stephanie Souza, she works at Nike in the Global Social Media division. She is responsible for writing and posting stories and videos about athletes that the company sponsors from all over the world. Stephanie has a passion for sports and spreading the word about how great the NIke company is, which is one of the reasons why I was drawn to her. Another reason is that she has a passion for sports and being able to share that passion with the rest of the world. Furthermore, I was drawn to her because she is a female in the sports world doing things that were once thought impossible for a woman. The fact that she is opening the door and showing women that it is possible to work in the sports industry is a major reason why I am drawn to her.

In her work, she is responsible for the Instagram content for the Nike company. When she makes these posts she has many rules to follow that are given by her regarding what she can and can’t post. According to an academic article written by Mastro “male reporters are more consistent than female reporters” (2012). This quote points out how in the sports world female reporters are seen as less reliable, which is not always the case. Stephanie notices this when she is at the office as there are more men than women in the office. Stephanie hopes that this will change in the next couple of years as more women enter the sports world. She is able to keep her Instagram posts for each athlete separate from one another by having separate highlights on the Nike Instagram page. Each highlight on the Nike Instagram page contains the player’s interviews and game highlights while keeping out their confidential information. An example of this can be seen on the Instagram page as she has a highlight for each basketball team as well as for the Nike company.

From Stephanie there are a few takeaways that I can apply to my life. The first one being that she classifies her athletes by highlight on the Instagram page. This is important for me as I can apply this concept to my future jobs. Another important takeaway that Stephanie has taught me is the importance of keeping athlete’s information confidential. I have noticed the importance of this and will definitely keep it in mind when I am working in corporate communications in sports in the future. For Stephanie she sees herself working at Nike for the foreseeable future. She has dreams that there will be more women who want to not only report but work in the sports world in other aspects as well. Stephanie has confidence that there will eventually be more females than males in the sports world.

Jami Macklin

Company: Under Armour

Position: Senior Manager of Brand Media

Jami’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jami-macklin-ba398112/

Under Armour Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/underarmour/

Under Armor has been providing aspiring athletes with superior athletic clothes since 1996. The company has many athletes in a variety of sports that represent the Under Armor brand. Meet Jami Macklin. Jami has been working at Under Armour for the past four years. She is responsible for overseeing the brand on the social media channels as well as posting on the channels as well. She does a fabulous job of making sure that the athletes representing the Under Armor brand are qualified and reputable.

Jami ensures that the athletes will not do anything reckless to tarnish the Under Armor name, if this does happen Jami is responsible for taking care of the issue on Instagram before it gets out of hand all while keeping the player’s information confidential. She posts what the athletes give the okay on their highlight section of the Under Armor Instagram that she runs. According to an academic article written by Pulido et al. “creating boundaries prevents the risk of exposing private information” (2017, p. 434). This quote points out how important it is to form boundaries with an athlete in order to reduce the amount of private information that may show up on Instagram about the specific athlete. Jami relies on this a lot especially when posting an athlete’s personal story. In addition, she is able to protect the athletes privacy by posting only their basic information about them on the Instagram that she runs, especially if the partnership with the said athlete is new. An example of this can be seen on the Under Armour Instagram page in her post about Joel Embiid who received the most valuable player award in the NBA for the 2022 -2023 season. She also double checks all of her social media posts before posting to make sure that there is nothing in the post that the athlete does not want to go out to the public.

From Jami there are a few concepts that I can take from her and apply to my own life. One concept from her that I will apply is that the athletes’ privacy must be prioritized in addition to brand promotion. Another takeaway that I will take from her is the importance of double checking with the athlete to make sure that they are okay with the post before I publicize it to Instagram. The next concept that I will be taking from Jami is her ability to set boundaries with the player when it comes to the amount of information about them that they would like online. The final takeaway from Jami that I thought was important is the way that she asks the athlete if it is okay for her to post about them on Instagram especially if the athlete is a new ambassador of the company. Jami sees herself working for Under Armor for the foreseeable future. She also aspires to continue opening doors for women to enter the sports world.

Kristen Henneman

Company: United States Figure Skating

Position: Communications Manager

Kristen’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristen-henneman/

United States Figure Skating Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/usfigureskating/

United States Figure skating has been around since 1921 and has been providing services to skaters across the U.S. ever since. The goal of United States Figure Skating is to make skating fun for everyone no matter how young or old. Enter Kristen Henneman. Kristen has been working at United States Figure Skating since 2021. She is the Communications Manager of the company. She deals with the media and posts regarding the athletes. Kristen takes part in what is known as co – ownership. She is able to develop a relationship with the athlete to become a co-owner of their personal information. Once Kristen becomes the co-owner it is her job to not post about the information she received unless the skater gives the okay. An example of this that can be seen on the USFSA Instagram page that she runs is when she posted a quote from Sonia Baram and how she felt about the amount of support she received during the junior championships. This can be applied to academic research as well. According to an academic article written by Brandhoff & Maria “if the coach made accommodations, the communication was more effective” (2016, p. 27). The quote points out the idea that when coaches were willing to provide better directions about a skill, the skater was able to better understand and correctly perform the said skill. In addition, Kristen has rules that she follows when it comes to posting on Instagram. These rules allow her to coordinate with the skaters about what can and not be posted in the U.S. Figure Skating Instagram that she runs. An example of this can be seen on the USFSA Instagram page when she did a post about how the Olympic games are more than medals.

Kristen has many takeaways that I can apply to my own life. The first concept that I can apply is the ability to become a co-owner of an athlete’s private information. I can apply this because I understand the importance of building a relationship with an athlete in order to become a co-owner of the skater’s confidential information. Another approach that I can take from her is the way that she sometimes crosses the line with the athlete in order to get the whole truth about a story. This is important because it may need to be done in order to destroy a rumor about the skater on Instagram. In the future Kristne hopes to continue working for U.S. Figure Skating in her current position. She aspires that more women will want to work in the sports world in the future. Kristen is optimistic that more current skaters once they retire will want to continue working in the figure skating world. She hopes that she is an inspiration to other young women who have dreams about working in the sports world.

Brittany Galske

Company: US Soccer Federation

Position: Social Media Coordinator

Brittany’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brittany-galske/

US Soccer Federation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ussoccer/

The United States Soccer federation has been around since 1913. The federation has since grown and is advocating for players all across the U.S. Meet Brittany Galske, the social media coordinator for the federation. Brittany has been working for the federation since 2018 and is responsible for reviewing all of the social media posts about the players as well as interviewing the athletes. When Brittany first started at the federation she was the sports equipment manager and she eventually worked her way up to her current position. I was drawn to Brittany because she has the ability to control what goes on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for the federation. In addition, I chose her because she does a really good job of finding a way to make her posts about the players fun and engaging. I decided on her because she is setting the example for women who want to work in sports on the soccer side. Furthermore, I recognized her because she has a strong passion for soccer and the work she does every day.

Brittany does an excellent job of verifying with the player about what information they want out of the public’s eye. From the academic article written by Cassilo “boundary turbulence is necessary in some cases” (2019, p. 244). This quote points out how some sports reporters may cross over the boundaries that the player and reporter have set in order for the reporter to get the athlete’s full emotions. Furthermore, Brittany has organized the players by highlights on the U.S. Soccer Instagram page that she runs. That way when she completes an interview with an athlete she can easily insert it into the correct highlight spot on the US Soccer Instagram page. An example of this can be seen on the page when she did her post about Alex Morgan and her team’s new uniforms. She then inserted Alex’s post into the highlight she has of her.

In the future, Brittany hopes to continue to work for the soccer federation in her current position which allows her to plan out the questions she will ask the players in advance. She has confidence about her ability to open more doors for women to enter into the sports world. In addition, she aspires that more women will see her work and that she will inspire young women to pursue a career in the sports world. Brittany would like to continue posting highlights and interviews of players on social media. Brittany feels that her work is extremely important especially when it comes to working with the soccer teams as a whole and sees herself in this role for a long time. Brittany has taught me the importance of advanced planning especially when it comes to interviewing players. She has also taught me the importance of privacy management which is a concept that is extremely important in the sports world. I plan to take what I have learned from Brittany and apply it to my own life and future roles I may have.

Rebecca Friedman

Company: National Hockey League (NHL)

Position: Director of Social Media Programs

Rebecca’s LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebeccafriedman/

NHL Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/nhl/

The National Hockey League is composed of 32 teams from the United States and Canada. The league has been around since 1917. Enter Rebeca Friedman. She has been with the league since 2022. Rebecca’s position with the league is the director of social media programs. She is responsible for interviewing athletes as well as preparing for upcoming events such as the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs. I was drawn to Rebecca because I hope to one day work in the hockey industry on the communications side and maybe even gain some experience on the social media side as well. Furthermore, I was inspired by her because she is a part of a small percentage of women that have the privilege of working in the sports industry, specifically hockey. There are more women that are gaining important roles in the league whether that be on the bench as part of the coaching staff, working in the social media department or even being a part of the communications and marketing team. I also choose her because she is setting a great example for young women who have just graduated college and are looking to work in the hockey industry.

Rebecca prioritizes keeping certain information confidential about each athlete that she interviews. She is also able to handle the athletes’ private information in a mature manner by having each athlete’s information in a separate highlight on the NHL Instagram page. In addition, she ensures that no one should access athletes’ personal information except her. Furthermore, Rebecca excels at her role because she is able to conceal that private information from being posted on social media. This can be seen in academic research as well. From an academic article written by Pulido et al, “creating boundaries prevents the risk of exposing private information” (2017, p. 438). This means that Rebecca has the ability to understand that certain athletes’ information needs to be kept private and off of social media. Furthermore, Rebecca’s job is to post about the player’s accomplishments. An example of this is when she posted about Yanni Gourde who plays for the Seattle Kraken who scored the overtime goal in game 1 of the second round of the playoffs versus the Dallas Stars.

In conclusion, from Rebecca I have learned that it is important to keep athletes’ information confidential and all in one place. I have also learned the importance of being able to organize the information by sport, league and player. In addition, I have picked up her perseverance especially as a woman in a predominantly male field. I hope to be able to follow in her footsteps and be able to work in the communications field where I can also interact with players and coaches from the different sports leagues. Furthermore, I hope to take what I have learned from her and apply it to my current job and my future job as well. Rebecca will continue to work for the NHL where she will continue to interview athletes as well as prepare for upcoming events. She also will continue to keep the players’ information private until they are ready, if they ever are, to have it released to the rest of the world on social media.

Kaitee Daley

Company: ESPN

Position: Vice President of Social Media

Kaitee’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kaiteedaley/

ESPN Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/espn/

ESPN is known as one of the biggest sports networks which covers a wide range of sports. The network has been doing so well that they now have an international network. Kaitee Daley is the Vice President of Social Media and has been working for the company for almost 15 years. Katiee is responsible for creating and posting stories across social media platforms as well as reviewing posts before they are published on social media.

Kaite is also responsible for interviewing the athletes before and after their game. In addition to interviewing the athletes she is also responsible for overseeing and reviewing the posts of her co-workers as well to make sure that they are not violating anything that the athlete may want to keep confidential. She does a really good job of organizing the athletes’ information by their sport and team by having highlights on the ESPN Instagram page that she runs. This is important to note as Kaitee does her best from talking about the players’ personal lives unless they have just been drafted into the NBA, NHL or MLB and she is doing a player profile on that specific player. An example of this is when she posted about NBA star James Harden from the Philadelphia 76ers. In this post Kaitee pointed out how many points, assists and field goals he made to help his team get the win over the Boston Celtics in the NBA playoffs. These concepts have been noticed in academic literature as well. From the academic article written by Siguencia et al., “Instagram has revolutionized marketing” (2017, p. 79). The quote points out how Instagram has changed and why sports media employees need to be more aware of what they are posting about their athletes on this specific social media platform. This quote is important because Kaitee has to use her strengths as a social media employee to really keep the athletes’ personal information confidential. As a result, she is still able to put some new and exciting information about the athlete on social media.

There is a lot that I can learn from Kaitee. From Kaitee I have learned the importance of rereading and editing a post before it goes live on Instagram. She additionally organizes the athletes information by using the highlight section on the ESPN Instagram that she runs. This is especially valuable and important in the sports world. In addition, Kaitee hopes to continue her career with ESPN in her current role. She enjoys posting on the ESPN Instagram. She has confidence that she is setting an example for all of the women out there who have dreams of working in the sports industry. Kaitee will continue to post stories about the athletes and what they are up to in both their professional and personal lives. Kaitee hopes that one day the sports industry will have a higher ratio of women in the industry.

As a female who has dreams of working in the sports world specifically on the corporate communications side, Kaitee is someone who I look up to. I will also be considering the importance of privacy management in my career path. I hope that this post will inspire other women who dream of working in sports to just go for it, because this industry needs more females! I hope that I have inspired someone to go ahead and take the leap into the sport industry whether it be behind the scenes or in front of the camera reporting. Katie has taught me many concepts that I hope to integrate into both my professional career and life in general.

Leah Hendrickson

Company: Chicago Blackhawks

Position: Social Media Manager

Leah’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leahhendrickson/

Chicago Blackhawks Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlblackhawks/

The Chicago Blackhawks have been around since 1926. Since then the team has gone on to win three stanley cups which is one of the hardest trophies to win in all of sports. Enter Leah Hendrickson.

Leah has been with the Blackhawks for the past 11 years. She has had many roles that have led her to the social media manager position that she is currently in. Her position allows her to accommodate In addition, she also does her best to make sure that all of her posts are relatable to the general public and to all hockey fans. An example of this can be seen on the Chicago Blackhawks Instagram that she runs where she has posted a reel about the 35 top moments from Jonathan Toews career for his birthday. This is one of many posts that the fans can relate to as they may remember being present for a highlight or two. Furthermore, she is able to accommodate by making sure that she posts about all of the players and the team equally so that one player does not get more attention than the rest. According to an academic article written by Suggs, “reporters have no guaranteed privileges in the locker room or press box” (2016, p. 275). This quote is important to recognize because it talks about how reporters for the different teams and companies do not always get the game recap straight from an athlete after a game. This is valuable information for Leah because she is responsible for posting about the player’s interview or highlights on the Chicago Blackhawks Instagram that she runs. Around the holidays Leah enjoys posting about the player’s holiday outfits, especially the suits that they tend to wear around the Christmas season. This can be seen in Leah’s posts on the Chicago Blackhawks Instagram. Leah further takes the confidential information about each player and organizes it into the highlights that she has for each player on the Instagram page. She does this in order to keep her information organized.

There are a few takeaways from Leah that are important to highlight. The first one is  her ability to verify with the players that the post is okay to go on Instagram before she publishes it. I will use this takeaway in my future job especially after I have finished interviewing someone. Another important takeaway from Leah is that she understands that she might not be able to get the recap of the game straight from the athlete directly after the game. This is important for me to recognize as a woman entering the sports world is that I might not always be the first person to hear new information first hand from the player. Leah aspires that more women will follow in her footsteps as she continues to open doors for women in the sports world. Leah sees herself working for the Chicago Blackhawks until she retires. Leah is optimistic that there will be more women in the sports world who will be able to stick up for female athletes in the near future.

Sydney Gille

Company: Milwaukee Brewers

Position: Social Media Coordinator

Sydney’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sydney-gille-b636a2155/

Milwaukee Brewers Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brewers/?hl=en

“And that’s another Brewer’s win!” imagine hearing that at your job daily. Well working for the only major league baseball team in the state of Wisconsin, you might get that chance. Meet Sydney Gille, the Social Media Coordinator for the Milwaukee Brewers. Sydney is one of the few who are fortunate to hear this announcement on a daily basis. She has been fortunate enough to have been working for the team since 2022. Sydney started out with the Brewers as the Social Media Specialist and she quickly worked her way up to her current position within 6 months time. I was drawn to Sydney because she has many characteristics that I hope to embody from her as I graduate college and navigate the real world. Furthermore, Sydney drew me in because she was so passionate and driven that she was able to climb the ladder to a major role within the club very quickly. I was attracted to her since she is one of the few women that are in the baseball world and I thought that since she was working in Milwaukee it was even better.

There are many ways in which Sydney keeps the players’ information private. The first way that she does this is by not posting that information onto the Milwaukee Brewers Instagram page that she is responsible for. This is one way that Sydney keeps the player’s personal information confidential. According to an academic article written by Hooper “athletes can create issues on the sites” (2017, p. 2). This quote discusses what can potentially happen on social media if there are no boundaries set for the players. Sydney has noticed that this is especially prevalent when a media outlet spreads a rumor about a player, and the player tries to step in but instead the player ends up creating more havoc on the site which leads to Sydney stepping in to resolve the issue. This is important to recognize as it is a part of Sydney’s role when dealing with player’s privacy. She does this by having separate highlights for each player on the Milwaukee Brewers Instagram that she runs. Within each of these highlights she has the player’s highlights from their game and any records that they have broken that are specific to them and not the rest of the team.

Sydney hopes to continue her work with the Milwaukee Brewers for the majority of her career. She enjoys the aspect of not only talking to the players but being able to come up with clever captions for her posts as well. She has faith that more women will want to work in the sports world because of her. She wants to stay in the baseball part of the sports world because she feels like she is doing her part of opening the door for more women in the industry in the near future. From Sydney, I have learned the importance of boundaries especially regarding interviews. I further have learned the importance of forming a relationship with each individual player and learning about their boundaries regarding their personal information.
