Piece #1: Converse Branding Presentation

This piece hits learning outcomes 1 and 2 because it is a creative way to approach communicative goals and recognizes the influence of messages. This presentation was my final project for COME 389: Strategic Communication which I took in Spring 2022. We had to choose a large/popular company to create new branding for, and my group and I chose Converse. We had to investigate the weaknesses and limitations of the brand as well as previous ad campaigns that have fallen short and then create three different ad campaigns through three different modes of communication, and we chose a commercial, podcast and social media campaign. We were asked to prepare this presentation as if we were going to present it at a meeting with the marketing department of Converse, but presented it to our class.

Piece #2: LGBTQ Representation Infographic

This piece hits learning outcomes 1 and 3 because it was a creative method to communicate and is a form of communication research. This is an infographic I created for COME 389: Netflix as Disruptive Entertainment which I took in Summer 2022. I was tasked with choosing a specific genre of Netflix original movie, then finding a way to analyze how representative it is of a minority group of people. So, I decided to find out how  much LGBTQ+ representation there is in Netflix original romantic comedies. The intended audience was my classmates and professor.

Piece #3: Blog Post: Do school-based intervention programs actually work?

This piece hits all 3 learning outcomes because it shows that I can find and use relevant resources, enact mindful responses to messages, and evaluate and apply social scientific communication research. This is a blog post from my capstone project, (you can find a link to the full project under the “Capstone Project” tab on this website) which I completed in Spring 2023. The project is a media literacy campaign intended to educate parents, guardians, or other adults on the effect that social media has on the body image and mental health of adolescents. This particular post has to do with whether or not school intervention programs are the correct way to educate adolescents about media literacy and body positivity. I include information that I pulled from two social scientific research articles about the subject as well as include my own opinion. The target audience for this piece is parents, guardians, educators, etc..

This piece hits all 3 learning outcomes because it shows a creative method for accomplishing my communicative goals, that I can understand the influence of messages, and evaluate and apply both critical and social scientific communication research. This is a poster I made for COME 124: Principles of Mass Communication which I took in Spring 2023. We had a few options to choose from for what kind of poster we wanted to create, and I chose a historical investigation of women’s fashion magazines. So, this poster is a timeline which includes some of the most important and groundbreaking moments in the history of fashion magazines. The target audience was my classmates, as I had to present it to all of them.

Piece #5: Image Repair Essay of Olivia Jade Giannulli in the College Admissions Scandal

This piece hits all 3 learning outcomes because it shows that I can understand the influence of messages and actively listen, as well as identify, interpret, evaluate, apply, and take part in social scientific research. This is a paper that I wrote for COME 389: Crisis Communication in Summer 2022. I had to choose a public scandal, then determine whether or not the individual successfully repaired their image according to Benoit’s Image Repair Discourse. I chose to analyze the college admission scandal of 2019, and specifically, Olivia Jade Giannulli’s involvement as she had millions of YouTube followers and is the daughter of famous actor Lori Laughlin and fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli. The target audience was my professor.

Piece #6: IRPP Assignment

This assignment hits learning outcomes 1 and 3 because it shows that I can understand the influence of messages as well as participate in both critical and social scientific research studies. This is a reflection I wrote for COME 180: Communication Research in Spring 2022. For this class I had to participate in 3 on campus research studies and critically reflect on my experience and what I learned from my participation. The target audience was my professor.

This piece hits learning outcome 3 because it shows I can identify, interpret and evaluate critical communication research. This is a scholarly article evaluation that I wrote for COME 124: Principles of Mass Communication in Spring 2022.
