In my Feminist and Gender essay, I discuss how Chopin uses Edna’s character in The Awakening to empower other women by showcasing Edna as a desire-driven woman. Edna desires freedom from domesticity and passion, which is a topic of discussion in a world where women were expected to only desire domesticity.
My ideas for this essay came to me very last minute as I didn’t realize our proposal was due until the due date. No matter, I quickly threw together some ideas and abstracts that I really liked for this essay and sent it in. Dr.P seemed to also like my ideas as this essay only needed one revision. Before my revision, my thesis simply argued that Edna broke gender stereotypes with her desires, but my revision includes the addition of a “so what” into my thesis, which is where the idea of Chopin empowering women using Edna comes from. This essay was the first that I received the thumbs-up on, and I cried when I received the good news.
