Identity.
This course delved into the heart of the role of gender identity in mass media. We focused our efforts on the online public spaces regarding gender and orientation and how it affects old and new media. Below is my final project where I conducted my own research on a topic I’m very passionate about.
GENDERS ASSEMBLE!

MARVEL’S Women Warriors & The Bechdel Test
My final project was based upon two great passions of mine: MARVEL and feminist studies. I designed the graphic above as well as the poster it belongs to (below). Though I found it disappointing how many films in the MCU did not pass the Bechdel Test for determining gender equality and fair representation in media, I found that there were quite possibly more influential and more important ways of determining a film’s gender representation. For instance, doing a content analysis of the characters themselves to see if they present stereotypical gender normative traits. Nearly every film failed the Bechdel test, yet every MCU film established strong female role models in each film. More than not, these women took on stereotypical male traits vs. female. I found the results to be quite impressive.
