COME 252: Writing for Media

Exposure.

How does one successfully get attention? Recognition?

Writing for media takes many forms, wears many hats.

Journalism is an art all on its own. Meanwhile advertisements walk a different tightrope.

This class enhanced my social media writing experience alongside learning the unexplored territory of other types of media writing:

Columns, Social Media Pages, Advertisements, etc.

Writing for media in general is based around this singular idea of exposure. It’s exposure to the outside world. How to show the face of company, but not just the face, we want the good side. How to spin negative press in your favor. How to sell a product.

Writing is makeup for your platform.

I encountered several little projects that grew to develop into my final project: a personal service website offering my media services to the public.

Press Release for Dr. Kretz

A good example that is exemplary of my work is the press release I wrote for another professor of mine: Dr. Kretz. She had published a new research study that analyzed user-generated content in the form of tweets and analyzed the reactions involved in the parasocial breakup from onscreen heartthrob Dr. McDreamy from the show “Grey’s Anatomy”.

Advertising Plan

In this assignment, I had created an advertising plan that I had used in real life. I worked as a Creative Director for a small town fitness business called Just Be Fit and I had used this exact plan to sell and advertise the nutritional meal plans and fitness workouts she was aiming to sell online.

The photos below are real photos she used as covers to her plans. The graphics and the photos themselves were touched up and created by me.

Tweets for the Week

The parents of a friend of mine recently opened a rustic-looking wine/cafe bar with fine food and hearty drinks, but little recognition. They needed help getting the word out there in my hometown and she recruited my help. I was lucky enough to be able to turn this snippet into a college project for my Writing for Media class. There is a week long presentation put together of tweet ideas in order to get the word out about this adorable new dive.

The Website

My Everest. Completing my very own website to endorse my own personal side business of media/writing help to small businesses. Most of my business includes setting up websites for small businesses with owners who are not very tech savvy and don’t feel like learning. They’re often too busy to sweat stuff like this which is where I come in and save the day WonderWoman-style.
